Space and being in contemporary French cinema

        by James S. Williams

This book brings together for the first time five French directors who have established themselves as among the most exciting and significant working today: Bruno Dumont, Robert Guédiguian, Laurent Cantet, Abdellatif Kechiche, and Claire Denis. Whatever their chosen habitats or shifting terrains, each of these highly distinctive auteurs has developed unique strategies of representation and framing that reflect a profound investment in the geophysical world. The book proposes that we think about cinematographic space in its many different forms simultaneously (screenspace, landscape, narrative space, soundscape, spectatorial space). Through a series of close and original readings of selected films, it posits a new 'space of the cinematic subject'. Accessible and wide-ranging, this volume opens up new areas of critical enquiry in the expanding interdisciplinary field of space studies. It will be of immediate interest to students and researchers working not only in film studies and film philosophy, but also in French/Francophone studies, postcolonial studies, gender and cultural studies. Über den Prozeßcharakter von Literatur und Kultur

by Raymond Williams, H. Gustav Klaus, H. Gustav Klaus, H. Gustav Klaus

        Comic politics

        Gender in Hollywood Comedy

        by Mark Jancovich, Eric Schaefer

Are Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, and Eddie Murphy the celluloid compatriots of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair? This book argues that the rubber faces of '80s and '90s comedy films, helped to transform us into the flexible, self-managing citizens beloved of the new right—and its successors. Through its sustained look at the box-office comedies of the last two decades, Comic Politics provides a critical introduction to key approaches to comedy. It tests the usefulness and limits of psychoanalytics, Bakhtinian and postmodernist theory against comedians and comedies from Woody Allen to Wayne's World. The book includes a look at animation and computer enhanced comedies.

        Postcolonial African cinema

        Ten directors

        by David Murphy, Patrick Williams

This is the first introduction of its kind to an important cross-section of postcolonial African filmmakers from the 1950s to the present. Building on previous critical work in the field, this volume will bring together ideas from a range of disciplines - film studies, African cultural studies, and, in particular, postcolonial studies - in order to combine the in-depth analysis of individual films and bodies of work by individual directors with a sustained interrogation of these films in relation to important theoretical concepts. Structurally, the book is straightforward, though the aim is to incorporate diversity and complexity of approach within the overall simplicity of format. Chapters provide both an overview of the director's output to date, and the necessary background - personal or national, cultural or political - to enable readers to achieve a better understanding of the director's choice of subject matter, aesthetic or formal strategies, or ideological stance. They also offer a particular reading of one or more films, in which the authors aim to situate African cinema in relation to important critical and theoretical debates. This book thus constitutes a new departure in African film studies, recognising the maturity of the field, and the need for complex yet accessible approaches to it, which move beyond the purely descriptive while refusing to get bogged down in theoretical jargon. Consequently, the volume should be of interest not only to specialists but also to the general reader.

        Acting and performance in Hitchcock

        by Adrian Garvey, Victoria Lowe

Hitchcock's professed disdain for actors is belied by the extraordinary range and depth of performances featured in his films. It might even be argued that many stars gave their richest and most complex performances in his work. Hitchcock's films are also imbued with the theme of performance, as when his fugitive men and errant women assume fragile new identities and move between roles. Actors and other performers also often feature as characters. However, the exhaustive academic literature on Hitchcock has to date produced surprisingly little work about acting and performance in his films. The collection includes contributions from a range of leading scholars on Hitchcock, performance, stardom, and British Cinema, including Charles Barr, David Greven, Mark Glancy, Lucy Bolton, Lawrence Napper and Michael Williams, and an interview with leading composers/accompanists Neil Brand and Stephen Horne on scoring performance in Silent Hitchcock.

        The dilemma of Authority

        by Allyn Fives

The moral problem of authority is the challenge of reconciling legitimate authority (the right to rule) with the demands of freedom and rationality. In this book, I argue that authority can have legitimacy, but when it does it generates a moral dilemma, where the obligation to obey comes at some cost to freedom and reason. Hence, not only do I depart from the views of those who insist that authority can never have legitimacy, but also those who maintain that insofar as authority is legitimate it simply satisfies the demands of freedom or rationality. My focus here will be on both what it is that justifies authority (in particular focusing on membership, and the goods of membership) as well what type of reason an authoritative directive is, how it can come into conflict with others reasons, and how those conflicts are resolved.

        Film stars

        Hollywood and beyond

by Mark Jancovich, Andy Willis, Eric Schaefer, Susan Williams

        Stars are central to the cinema experience, and this collection offers a variety of fresh and informed perspectives on this important but sometimes neglected area of film studies.This book takes as its focus film stars from the past and present, from Hollywood, its margins and beyond and analyses them through a close consideration of their films and the variety of contexts in which they worked. The book spreads the net wide, looking at past stars from Rosalind Russell and Charlton Heston to present day stars including Sandra Bullock, Jackie Chan and Jim Carrey, as well as those figures who have earnt themselves a certain film star cachet such as Prince, and the martial artist Cynthia Rothrock. The collection will be essential reading for students and lecturers of film studies, as well as to those with a general interest in the cinema. ;
