The handling of drug interactions in the pharmacy has an important significance. A well-functioning interaction management system increases the safety of drug therapy for patients, promotes interdisciplinary exchange between physician and pharmacist, and boosts the skills of the local pharmacy. The author, an experienced practitioner, has developed standard templates for successfully communicating the most commonly occurring, clinically relevant interactions: - Decision aids in the form of flowcharts: When and how should the communication with the physician take place? - Aids to communication as sample forms that can be tailored to the individual pharmacy: What information does the physician need, what solutions does the pharmacy suggest? The forms cover both general interactions and specific interaction pairs and mechanisms: The appropriate solution for every interaction!
Interactions between medicines and foodstuffs may be just as clinically relevant as interactions between individual drugs. A single meal contains several hundred potentially interacting compounds that, in an individual patient, may be the deciding factor as to whether a treatment is successful or not. The resulting, sometimes serious risks are not known to most patients – nor to many physicians and pharmacists. This practical handbook enables anyone interested in applied pharmacotherapy to keep abreast of the complex field of drug interactions. The authors – proven experts in clinical pharmacology and pharmaconutrition – describe the most important interactions and give concrete recommendations for action. Tables and overviews permit fast access to potentially problematic combinations. This completely updated edition now also includes information about fruit juices and curcumin as well as a new chapter on food interactions in oncology.

Indian mulberry, St. John’s wort, Hawaiian baby woodrose – whether disputed wonder drug, traditional medicinal plant or unknown exotic plant – the Lexicon of Medicinal Plants can always be relied upon. The lexical and classic knowledge about the individual medicinal plants – such as family, origin, use, effect and constituents – garnered over decades and peppered with particular anecdotes on the herbal drugs, can be regarded as unique and largely timeless. At the repeated request of readers, this reference work has therefore been reissued in book form, with its contents largely unchanged but with misprints corrected and its layout modernised. A wealth of experience that even in the fast-moving digital world preserves traditional knowledge.
Germs and governance brings together leading historians, practitioners and policy makers to consider the past, present and future of hospital infection control. Combining historical case-studies with practitioner experiences, this volume offers a new understanding of the emergence of theories of germ transmission and containment and how these theories played out in real-world environments, networks and professional organisations. Exploring the historical context in which technologies like gloves were developed and popularised, as well as how relationships between communities and hospitals, doctors and nurses, and the emerging role of hospital bacteriologists have shaped infection control practices, the collection emphasises the diverse contexts in which ideas about germs, infection and safety circulated. The volume also addresses the historical neglect of the critical role of nurses in the development and success of infection control measures.

This book is a powerful addition to a developing literature informed by arts and humanities research carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic. Investigating the impacts of crisis governance and decision-making on people and populations, the book brings together microbial organisms and humans, children and data, decision-making and infection prevention, publics and process, global vaccine distribution and citizens' juries. Through its eight chapters, the book stimulates broadly-drawn discussions about exceptional executive powers in an emergency, the role of trust, and the importance of the principles of good governance - such as selflessness, ethics, integrity, accountability and honesty in leadership. The lessons drawn out in this book will support future decision-makers in both ordinary times and extra-ordinary emergencies.
What does it mean to be called an industrial designer? This book traces the remarkable rise of this professional identity in historical perspective from a position of anonymity in the early twentieth century, to mid-century professionalisation, to decline and disintegration by 1980. Drawing on new, extensive, original archival research, it uncovers the history of a profession in a state of re-invention, 1930-1980 in Britain and the United States. The book tests assumptions about the relationship between the professions in the two countries, bringing them into comparative historical perspective for the first time. The gendered dynamics of professionalisation and their interaction with the representation of the heroic male designer are interrogated and critically examined. Building on new gender perspectives to the history of the industrial design profession, the book calls for a re-examination of the limits and boundaries of what constitutes professional identity and work.
