        Wartime cinema, Englishness and propaganda

        Michael Powell and the ‘Pressburger Touch’

        by Ina Habermann

        This book provides a fresh analysis of the wartime work of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and their team 'the Archers'. It argues that in their earlier work, Powell and Pressburger should be seen as middlebrow storytellers whose stories explore national identity in times of war. Their wartime work is discussed in four phases: While the first phase covers their contributions to the 'phoney war', the second traces their engagement with the 'people's war'. The third phase sees the Archers move beyond propaganda, towards memodramas of Englishness, cross-cultural alliances and quests for spiritual modernity. The fourth phase dramatizes post-war preoccupations with an increasing focus on memory and trauma. Following up these thematic concerns, the conclusion is devoted to Pressburger's later work, including his two published novels Killing a Mouse on Sunday and The Glass Pearls.

        Heiratsbündnis und Denkweise in einer Lokalkultur des Himalaya

        by Michael Oppitz, Robert Powell

        True Crime in Versform

        by Juliane Liebert

        Mörderballaden gibt es, seit der Mensch Geschichten erzählt. Ob H. C. Artmanns Dialektgedichte, Bertolt Brechts Moritat von Mackie Messer oder Nick Caves Murder Ballads – sie alle handeln von Verbrechen. Juliane Liebert holt dieses Genre in die Gegenwart und dichtet von einer Bankräuberin in Männerkleidern, die in einem Stand-off mit der Polizei erschossen wird. Von Opfern politischer Verfolgung. Von Brieffreundschaften mit zum Tode Verurteilten. Von der Zeit, »der wahren mörderin«. Sie fragt, »wie es wohl meiner mutter geht / dort in der erde / trinkt sie? horcht sie? ist ihr kalt?« und »hast du angst? ich sagte nein. ich wollte keine haben«. Sie berichtet von Mord und Totschlag, unseren Ängsten und Wünschen – und spiegelt darin den ganzen Wahnsinn der Welt. »song: essen töten shoppen«.

        Defectors and the Liberal Party 1910–2010

        A study of inter-party relationships

        by Alun Wyburn-Powell

        This book is the first analysis of political defections over a long time span. It investigates all the Liberal/Liberal Democrat MPs and former MPs who defected from the party between the elections of December 1910 and May 2010 - around one sixth of all those elected - as well as the smaller number of inward defectors. Each of the 122 defections was an expert judgment on the state of the party at a specific date. The research investigates the timing and reasons for all the defections and reveals long-term trends and underlying causes and apportions responsibility between leaders for them. The author finds some significant differences which distinguished defectors from loyalists and draws wider conclusions about the underlying factors which lead MPs to defect. This book will be of interest to students and lecturers of British politics and anyone interested in the relationship between British political parties in the last century. ;
