Jack Tar to Union Jack argues that popular representations of naval men increasingly reflected and informed imperial masculine ideals in Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Alaine, Kind aus einer ungarisch-protestantischen Familie, versucht, jüdischen Bekannten zu helfen. Sie ist ein offenes, unerschrockenes junges Mädchen, verliebt in János, mit dem sie sich im Herbst, als die Front naht, zur Flucht entschließt. Westlich von Budapest gerät die kleine Flüchtlingsgruppe mitten in die ungarisch-deutsch-russischen Kriegshandlungen hinein. János wird von Rotarmisten abgeführt, Alaine fällt der systematischen Vergewaltigung zum Opfer. Was ihr widerfuhr und wie sie überlebt hat, darüber kann sie erst Jahrzehnte später sprechen. Als das Buch 1991 erschien, löste es ungläubiges Entsetzen aus. In elf Sprachen übersetzt, zählt es heute zu den bedeutendsten Lebenszeugnissen von Frauen aus den Jahren des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Mitteleuropa.

Picturing the Western Front
Photography, practices and experiences in First World War France

Between 1914 and 1918, military, press and amateur photographers produced thousands of pictures. Either classified in military archives specially created with this purpose in 1915, collected in personal albums or circulated in illustrated magazines, photographs were supposed to tell the story of the war. Picturing the Western Front argues that photographic practices also shaped combatants and civilians' war experiences. Doing photography (taking pictures, posing for them, exhibiting, cataloguing and looking at them) allowed combatants and civilians to make sense of what they were living through. Photography mattered because it enabled combatants and civilians to record events, establish or reinforce bonds with one another, represent bodies, place people and events in imaginative geographies and making things visible, while making others, such as suicide, invisible. Photographic practices became, thus, frames of experience.

Affect and emotions in marriage migration

Since the early 1990s, economic exchanges between China and Taiwan have paved the way to migration across a previously closed border and to social and cultural interactions between the two populations. Despite these broader changes, the unresolved issue of Taiwan sovereignty has tainted not only the relations between the two governments but also the everyday life of those who move across the Taiwan Strait. In this politicised environment, intimate and affective practices linked to cross-border marriage and family formation are never just private. Instead, they are deeply entangled with the emotional and affective processes generated at the macro and meso level of political and social life and revolving around national interests. Tracing the intimate, emotional and affective practices linked to family creation, identity formation and integration with the local and national communities, this ethnographic study offers a subjective, dynamic, and complex picture of what it means to be a mainland spouse in Taiwan.
