1959, kurz nach Uwe Johnsons Übersiedelung in den Westen Berlins und der Veröffentlichung seines Debütromans Mutmassungen über Jakob, beginnen der Briefwechsel und die Freundschaft zwischen ihm und Hans Magnus Enzensberger. Über einen Zeitraum von acht Jahren verständigen sie sich über die literarische und politische Lage und diskutieren die Spielräume politischen Engagements. Zugleich aber zeugen die 161 Dokumente von einer Auseinandersetzung über Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Freundschaft. Bereits im Oktober 1966 forderte Uwe Johnson, den gemeinsamen Briefwechsel „nicht mehr fuer eine kuenftige Edition und Altersversorgung einzurichten sondern fuer Zwecke der brutalen Verstaendigung“. Über scheinbar Alltäglichem kommt es zu prinzipiellen Betrachtungen und zuletzt zu einem Zerwürfnis: Daß Uwe Johnson seine Berliner Wohnungen Enzensbergers erster Frau Dagrun und dessen Bruder Ulrich zur Verfügung stellt, führt in Aporien von Vertrauen, Bürgschaft und Verantwortung. Ein Jahr später erreicht selbst diese Verständigung ihre Grenzen – unter Hinterlassung einer Korrespondenz, bei der sich beide Partner nichts schuldig bleiben: am wenigsten den hochpointierten Dialog zweier grundverschiedener Naturen. Ihre Edition liegt hiermit vor.
Von Hans-Ulrich Treichel liegen hier zwei Gedichtbände vor. Nach dem ersten Kapitel, dem Rückblick auf die Herkunft, folgt im nächsten der Gang zum Psychotherapeuten, in der Hoffnung, sich bei ihm von den Bedrückungen der Kindheit befreien zu können. Im dritten Kapitel reist der Berichtende nach Süditalien, um dort eine Stelle als Deutschlehrer an einer Universität anzunehmen.
