Ein Klassiker der chinesischen Literatur – erstmals vollständig übersetzt

Dies ist die erste originalgetreue, ungekürzte Übersetzung der Vollständigen Überlieferung von den Ufern der Flüsse (水滸全傳), einem der vier großen Klassiker der alten chinesischen Literatur. Der Roman spielt zur Zeit der Sòng-Dynastie (960-1279). 107 Männer und eine Frau um ihren Anführer Sòng Jiāng bilden den verschworenen Bund von den »Flachseen am Brückenberg«, in dem sie sich gegen Korruption und krasse Willkür der Herrschenden zur Wehr setzen. Ihr Leitstern sind dabei traditionelle Werte des Neokonfuzianismus wie der grundsätzlich wohlwollende und fürsorgliche Umgang aller Menschen miteinander – was erbitterte kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen zu deren Durchsetzung nicht ausschließt. Der Roman besticht durch seinen Handlungs- und Personenreichtum und die naturalistischen Schilderungen gesellschaftlicher Umstände während der Sòng und ausgehenden Yuán-Zeit, wie Ess- und Trinkkultur, urbanes Leben, Wohnung, Familienbeziehungen, aber auch Kriegsführung, das Geschlechterverhältnis, Hierarchien, Gepflogenheiten in den Gefängnissen. Lyrische Passagen von mitreißender Bildkraft beschwören Natureindrücke oder vergegenwärtigen die zentrale Bedeutung von Kleidung als Ausdruck von Schönheit und Rang. Auf rund 2000 Seiten ist hier der chinesische Originaltext so getreu wie möglich und dabei gut lesbar übertragen. Sachkundige Kommentare und umfassende Erläuterungen des gesamten historischen, daoistischen, buddhistischen, neokonfuzianischen Kontextes und Bildreservoirs ergänzen die weitverzweigte Handlung.

The public culture of the Victorian middle class looks at the creation of a distinctive 'high' culture in the industrial cities of Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester in the mid-nineteenth century and its incipient decline from the 1880s. The history of urban bourgeois culture has been relatively unexplored and under-theorised compared to popular culture. This volume therefore represents a significant contribution both to the study of middle-class cultural forms and to an understanding of the relationship between culture and power. In particular, it argues for the importance of ritualised modes of social behaviour in understanding the construction of authority in the nineteenth-century city. As well as many original arguments, the book provides a clear and useful overview of the public cultures of Victorian 'respectability'. The book will be of interest to scholars and students in the areas of social history, cultural history, urban history, cultural studies, urban studies and the sociology of culture. ;

Unstable universalities, available for the first time in paperback, examines the theme of universality and its place in radical political theory. Saul Newman argues that both Marxist politics of class struggle and the postmodern politics of difference have reached their historical and political limits, and that what is needed is a new approach to universality, a new way of thinking about collective politics. By exploring various themes and ideas within poststructuralist and post-Marxist theory, the book develops a new and original approach to universality - one that has important implications for politics today, particularly on questions of power, subjectivity, ethics and democracy. In so doing, it engages in debates with thinkers such as Laclau, Zizek, Badiou and Rancière over the future of radical politics. This book offers the first authoritative guide to assumptions about time in theories of contemporary world politics. It demonstrates how predominant theories of the international or global 'present' are affected by temporal assumptions, grounded in western political thought, that fundamentally shape what we can and cannot know about world politics today. The first part of the book traces the philosophical roots of assumptions about time in contemporary political theory. The second part examines contemporary theories of world politics, including liberal and realist International Relations theories and the work of Habermas, Hardt and Negri, Virilio and Agamben. In each case, it is argued, assumptions about political time ensure the identification of the particular temporality of western experience with the political temporality of the world as such and put the theorist in the unsustainable position of holding the key to the direction of world history. In the final chapter, the book draws on postcolonial and feminist thinking, and the philosophical accounts of political time in the work of Derrida and Deleuze, to develop a new 'untimely' way of thinking about time in world politics. ;

Sie übersetzt Literatur und wissenschaftliche Schriften französischsprachiger Autoren ins Deutsche, u.a. von Claude Simon, Jorge Semprún, Marcel Mauss, Mircea Eliade, Gilles Deleuze und Lévi-Strauss. Sie wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet: 1982 'Helmut-M.-Braem-Preis', 1991 'Celan-Preis'. Claude Simon, geboren am 10. Oktober 1913 auf Madagaskar, gilt als Vertreter des "Nouveau Roman". Er starb am 6. Juli 2005 in Paris. 1985 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
