Eine deutsche Familie macht Mitte der 1920er Jahre Sommerferien im italienischen Urlaubsort Torre di Venere. Doch sie fühlt sich nicht willkommen: Eine eigentümliche Gereiztheit und feindseliger Nationalismus prägen die Atmosphäre, und es kommt zu unangenehmen Vorfällen. Dennoch reist die Familie nicht ab, sondern besucht am Ende ihres Urlaubs die Vorstellung des obskuren Zauberers Cipolla und wird Zeuge, wie Cipolla, ein Scharlatan und ein marktschreierischer Possenreißer, sein Publikum hypnotisiert und manipuliert. Besonders in dem jungen Kellner Mario glaubt er, ein Opfer gefunden zu haben, das er bis aufs Tiefste demütigen kann. Doch als Mario aus der Hypnose erwacht und begreift, was geschehen ist, kommt es zur Katastrophe.
