        Republican passions

Family, friendship and politics in nineteenth-century France

        by Susan K. Foley

Republican passions demonstrates the crucial role of family and friendship networks in the creation of the French Third Republic. Based on the family archives of Léon Laurent-Pichat, journalist, Deputy and Life Senator, this study paints a rich picture of republican intimacy, sociability and political activity during the Second Empire and early Third Republic. It explores republican friendships and family connections as men and women worked together for the cause. In republican circles, as the book illustrates, the intimate and political realms were not separate but deeply intertwined and interdependent.

        Robert Guédiguian

        by Joseph Mai

Intervening at the crossroads of philosophy, politics, and cinema, this book argues that the career of Robert Guédiguian is the result of one of the most original and coherent projects in contemporary French cinema: to make a committed, historically-conscious cinema, in a local space, over a long period of time, but most especially with friends. The account starts with in-depth consideration of friendship and its relation to philosophy, politics, time, and space. The book chronologically traces this project as it begins in Guédiguian's hometown, the Communist-leaning Marseille. It further unfolds through the political transformations of the 1980s Left and the local activism and utopias of the 1990s, and spreads into Guédiguian's varied explorations of genre and register. Close analysis is accompanied with historical and social contextualization, but also with a consistent return to the underlying, radical and philosophically rich project.

        Beyond nationalism

Acting and thinking for the common good in the European Union

        by João Labareda

This book discusses the meaning of the common good in a European Union thorned by nationalist tendencies and presents concrete policies to improve its achievement. It analyses the normative relevance of EU values as a shared moral standpoint that allows highly diverse member states to label a given collective choice as 'good' or 'bad'. It discusses the role of EU institutions as both guardians and enablers of EU values in a globalised world and introduces a few proposals for institutional reform at the EU level that could strengthen this role. It also presents six strategies to improve civic friendship in the EU, in the absence of which any institutional efforts to promote the common good may be undermined by the citizens' lack of willingness to share its burdens.

        My Most Beautiful Holidays

        Relaxation Stories for Children

        by Weber, Jutta Maria

The fast pace and the many stimuli of today's world, as well as the pressure to meet deadlines and perform, can easily lead to stress symptoms in children. It is therefore all the more important to support children in regenerating after stress, to help them achieve inner balance and to create islands of calm for them. The stories in this book immerse children from 5 to 12 years in experiences close to nature and help them to relax. The book contains three story series for reading aloud, each with a stay on a holiday farm as the frame story. The children are invited to go on journeys in their imagination, to perceive things attentively and to feel their own sensations quite consciously. In their imagination, they explore places in the midst of nature, make contact with the animals on the holiday farm and form friendships.

        by Dr. Petra Kiedaisch

In the middle of our lives, the cards are reshuffled: marriages are divorced, careers are questioned, friendships are ended, questions of meaning are asked, bodies change - and not just hormonally. At the same time, children leave home and parents become carers. From the age of 45, the majority of our population is at the centre of a second upheaval that affects all facets of our lives and leaves us at a loss in many ways. Not only in our daily lives, but also when it comes to planning for our own old age. This guide is designed to help us find our way. It presents the most important information from all areas relevant to a good life after 45. Leading experts from the fields of medicine, nutrition, philosophy, theology, psychology, care, law and finance give recommendations on what to look out for and what tools are needed to get through these challenging years unscathed. Useful checklists round off the articles. The book shows us the unique opportunity to see these challenges not as a crisis but as a source of strength. Not only can we come through this period of our lives healthy and happy, but we can also shape it so that the next age threshold is no longer frightening. During the second phase of adolescence, we lay the foundations for whether and how we will grow older. Be it in terms of health or living together with family and friends. Alaska Days with John Muir

        by Samuel Hall Young

Samuel Hall Young, a Presbyterian clergyman, met John Muir when the great naturalist's steamboat docked at Fort Wrangell, in southeastern Alaska, where Young was a missionary to the Stickeen Indians. In "Alaska Days With John Muir" he describes this 1879 meeting: "A hearty grip of the hand and we seemed to coalesce in a friendship which, to me at least, has been one of the very best things in a life full of blessings." This book, first published in 1915, describes two journeys of discovery taken in company with Muir in 1879 and 1880. Despite the pleas of his missionary colleagues that he not risk life and limb with "that wild Muir," Young accompanied Muir in the exploration of Glacier Bay. Upon Muir's return to Alaska in 1880, they traveled together and mapped the inside route to Sitka. Young describes Muir's ability to "slide" up glaciers, the broad Scotch he used when he was enjoying himself, and his natural affinity for Indian wisdom and theistic religion. From the gripping account of their near-disastrous ascent of Glenora Peak to Young's perspective on Muir's famous dog story "Stickeen," Alaska Days is an engaging record of a friendship grounded in the shared wonders of Alaska's wild landscapes.

        by Kai Pannen

Andro, Top Secret! - Emotions and other Disruptive Factors (Vol. 2)   Battery full and go!   At first glance, Andro Newman seems like a normal boy - but Andro is a robot who is secretly smuggled into a school class as a human boy. Mission: to explore the humans and not to be exposed under any circumstances.   Andro's undercover spy mission continues: visit the fifth grade of the Konrad Zuse School, gather information about the complicated species called "humans" and find true friends. However, one peculiarity of these humans remains a mystery to Andro: their illogical feelings. This costs the android a lot of friendship points. He installs an emotion module to connect with humans better - but secretly, of course. The ‘emotion’ module works and Andro earns a lot of friendship points! It even works too well and Andro is no longer master of his senses - sorry - of his cables and screws: Andro has to let Lilli in on it, and together they absolutely have to turn off the module.   • Situational comedy meets a great narrative voice • Varied layout with different fonts, vignettes and illustrations • Special hook: a robot goes undercover at school

The Heart of Time: The Forgotten Stories

        by Peetz, Monika

Everything is lost. Lena’s enemies have taken over the invisible city and launched a witch hunt for time travellers. Together with Bobbie, Lena takes refuge in the future and tries desperately to find other rebels. The near future is already very different compared to her present life: in 2031 climate change is undeniable and people pay by using implanted memory chips, which is frightening enough. Then her chronometer picks up a faint signal – from Dante. Lena can hardly wait to see him again. But can she be sure the signal is genuine?  Things take a dark turn when she is visited by a group of time tourists; in a distant future, time travel is big business. But no one seems to care about the chaos and damage this kind of tourism can cause – or even that it could destroy humanity itself.   For Lena, everything is on the line: the existence of the invisible city, the fate of humanity’s forgotten stories – and even her love for Dante.     12+ years The finale of this enthralling fantasy trilogy. Teenage intimacies

Young women, sex and social life in England, 1950-80

        by Hannah Charnock

Teenage Intimacies offers a new account of 'sexual revolution' in mid-twentieth century England. Rather than focusing on 'Swinging London', the book reveals the transformations in social life that took place in school playgrounds, local cinemas, and suburban bedrooms. Based on over 300 personal testimonies, Teenage Intimacies traces the everyday experiences of teenage girls, illuminating how romance, sex and intimacy shaped their young lives. The book shows how sex became embedded in ideas about 'growing up' and explores how heterosexuality influenced young women's social lives and vice versa. It offers new explanations of why sexual mores shifted in this period, revealing the pivotal role that young women played in changing sexual values, cultures and practices in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
