Overview
The Publishing House and its History
In 1956, Ragnar Tessloff founded the TESSLOFF VERLAG in Hamburg. The son of a Hamburg publisher, he began by bringing out German-language versions of American comics such as »Tom & Jerry« or »Lassie«. Then, during a trip across the USA, he discovered the children's nonfiction series ›HOW AND WHY‹ - and in 1959 enthusiastically concluded a licensing contract for it.
In 1961, the first nonfiction for children was published in Germany, in the shape of the ›WAS IST WAS‹ series. The concept has proven its worth ever since: TESSLOFF, which since 1989 has been based in Nuremberg, is one of the leading publishers in this field today. Over the years, ›WAS IST WAS‹ has developed into the knowledge brand for kids.
Program
›WAS IST WAS‹, the famous knowledge brand, has thrilled children for generations. It offers knowledge transfer in various forms of media – books, DVDs, audio books, quizzes, puzzle books and the knowledge platform www.wasistwas.de – all of them inviting children to learn, watch, listen and join in. With large-format photographs, witty extras, catchy texts, and colourful layouts, the ›WAS IST WAS‹ book series for children aged 8 and up presents expert knowledge in a fascinating and entertaining way. ›WAS IST WAS‹ already exists in more than 45 languages, and in over 100 countries.
With ›WAS IST WAS Kindergarten‹ little world explorers aged 3 and older will become absorbed by their favourite factual topics.
»On the flaps, discover, go« is the motto of the ›WAS IST WAS Junior‹ series. Numerous activity elements, fascinating explorer flaps and colourful illustrations let children aged 4 and older dive into the rich world of knowledge.
The new series ›WAS IST WAS First Reading‹ provides thrilling factual information that little space fans will love to read for themselves.
»Touch, Play, Learn!« is the motto of BOOKii, the new digital audio pen from Tessloff. Simply touch pictures or texts in the books with the pen, and you’ll hear original audio sounds! Characters start to speak, kids can hear music, or can have texts read aloud to them. The recording function of the pen and the MP3 player offer unlimited fun while learning. The BOOKii audio pen brings kids’ books to life!
The new series ›Little Major Tom‹ offers exciting expert knowledge and a good read for boys and girls! Galactic reading adventures for children from 7 and up have been created in successful collaboration with famous German singer Peter Schilling. In books and audio books, the three astronaut friends, little Major Tom, his friend Stella and robot cat Plutinchen experience fascinating adventures in space and on earth.
Activity titles, such as colouring and sticker books, for children of kindergarten and primary school age are also an important segment of TESSLOFF Verlag. The successful series ›FIT FOR SCHOOL‹ offers proven learning aids - recommended by primary school teachers!
High-quality picture books and board books support the little ones every step of the way as they develop – and they round off the publishing house’s range of products.
