Conflict, capital and culture

In Northern Ireland and the Politics of Boredom, however, I offer a radically different perspective. Adopting a stimulating interdisciplinary approach, I plumb the depths of this so called 'capitalist peace'. I propose that an intertwining of capitalist ideologies with military, urban, political, and touristic attempts at conflict resolution, from the 1960s onwards, has ingrained a fractious 'politics of boredom' throughout contemporary Northern Ireland. Moving boredom away from its singular and internalised rendering in the philosophies of Martin Heidegger and Søren Kierkegaard, the 'politics of boredom' I advance develops discourses of banality that underpin post-Marxist theory from Guy Debord to McKenzie Wark. Cast in this light, I argue that boredom can teach us the ways in which capitalism creates an all pervasive atmosphere constraining collective thought and action.

Its positioning as 'apolitical' forges institutions that fit comfortably into increasingly divided societies. The race-gender profile of these institutions reveals a White, middle-class profile of decision-makers, educators and staff that is mirrored in its audiences. Mechanisms that recycle the industry's whiteness include corporatist pedagogies, edicts of authority, disengagement with difference and inappropriate uses of mindfulness that distance People of the Global Majority. A growing emergent movement focused on a justice-infused mindfulness and liberatory wellbeing decolonises mindfulness and de-centres whiteness. Its premise in indigenous, global South, queer knowledges leverages difference to produce multiple solutions focused on liberation. There is room for White Mindfulness to change.

Although written and performed for early modern audiences, for whom the supernatural, whether sacred, demonic or folkloric, was part of the fabric of everyday life, the supernatural in Shakespeare continues to enthrall audiences and readers, and maintains its power to raise a range of questions in contemporary contexts. This edited collection of twelve essays from an international range of contemporary Shakespeare scholars explores the supernatural in Shakespeare from a variety of perspectives and approaches, generating new knowledge and presenting hitherto unexplored avenues of enquiry across the Shakespearean canon.

Stigmata in modern Britain and Ireland

This book is the first in-depth study of the changing perceptions and receptions of supernatural bodies in modern Britain and Ireland. It focuses on one phenomenon that became hotly contested and discussed in the public sphere between 1840 and 1940: the stigmata. In 1874, an Irish reporter asked why the wounds of the crucified Christ on mortal bodies could 'not be discussed with calmness. without indulging in angry rhetoric'. Supernatural bodies takes that question seriously. It draws on previously unexamined archival materials to place supernatural bodies at the heart of long-lasting discussions about the position of Roman Catholicism in society; the supernatural in modern Christianity and society; the authority of sciences; the relationship between Britain and Ireland, and between Britain and the Continent. Through the lens of stigmata controversies, this book shows how these discussions could converge around supernatural bodies.
