A social history

Drawing on an eclectic range of primary and secondary sources Chaplin examines the development of darts in the context of English society in the early twentieth century. He reveals how darts was transformed during the interwar years to become one of the most popular recreations in England, not just amongst working class men and, to a lesser extent, working class women but even (to some extent) among the middle and upper classes. This book assesses the social, economic and cultural forces behind this transformation. This work also considers the growth of the darts manufacturing industry and assesses the overall effect the growing popularity of darts had on interwar society and popular culture, with particular reference to the changing culture and form of the English public house. This original study will be of interest to sports historians, social historians, business historians, sociologists and sports scientists.

Patrick Roth, geboren 1953 in Freiburg im Breisgau, lebt als freier Autor in Los Angeles und Mannheim. Er begann seine künstlerische Karriere in den USA als Regisseur und Drehbuchautor. Zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre wechselte er in die Prosa und entwickelte seinen charakteristischen Stil als Erzähler von biblisch-mythischen Stoffen, so im letzten großen Roman Sunrise. Das Buch Joseph (2012) und den früheren Texten der Christus Trilogie (1998). Neben die Bilder der Bibel tritt im weiteren Werk die Welt des Films, so in Meine Reise zu Chaplin (1997), Die Nacht der Zeitlosen (2001) und Starlite Terrace (2004). Der lebenslangen Liebe zum Kino geht der autobiographische Erzählband Die amerikanische Fahrt (2013) auf den Grund. Für sein literarisches Schaffen wurde Patrick Roth vielfach geehrt und mit Poetikdozenturen an den Universitäten in Frankfurt, Heidelberg und Hildesheim ausgezeichnet.

Understanding film, television and radio comedy

Laughing Matters takes an analytic approach to film, television and radio comedy and provides an accessible overview of its forms and contexts. The introduction explains the value of studying comedy, concisely outlines the approach taken and summarises the relevant theories. The subsequent chapters are divided into two parts. The first part examines the specific forms comedy has taken as a constant and key element in film and broadcast comedy from their origins to the present. The second part shows how the genre gravitates towards contentious issues in British and American culture as it finds humour in the boundaries of class, gender, sexuality, race and logic. The authors cover silent cinema comedy including Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton, sound film comedies including the Marx Brothers and Laurel and Hardy, Romantic film comedy, radio, television situation and sketch comedy, comedy and genre (including parody and spoof), animations from cartoons to CGI, issues of gender and sexuality from drag comedy to queer reading, issues of taste and humour from Carry On to contemporary 'gross-out' , and issues of race and ethnicity including a case study of African-American screen comedy. Australia and the project of empire, 1867-1914

From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Australian settler colonists mobilised their unique settler experiences to develop their own vision of what 'empire' was and could be. Reinterpreting their histories and attempting to divine their futures with a much heavier concentration on racialized visions of humanity, white Australian settlers came to believe that their whiteness as well as their Britishness qualified them for an equal voice in the running of Britain's imperial project. Through asserting their case, many soon claimed that, as newly minted citizens of a progressive and exemplary Australian Commonwealth, white settlers such as themselves were actually better suited to the modern task of empire. Such a settler political cosmology with empire at its center ultimately led Australians to claim an empire of their own in the Pacific Islands, complete with its own, unique imperial governmentality.
