Hero und Leander

Hero, von den Eltern zur Priesterin bestimmt, lebt allein in Sestos am nördlichen Ufer der Dardanellen. Im gegenüberliegenden Abydos stürzt sich auf der asiatischen Seite Leander allnächtlich in die Fluten, um, geleitet von der Öllampe, die Hero ins Fenster ihres Wohnturms stellt, zu ihr zu gelangen – bis eines Nachts im Sturm die Flamme verlischt. Die Sage von den zwei Königskindern, die zusammen nicht kommen können, weil das Wasser viel zu tief ist, hat schon Ovid gestaltet, ihre vollendete Fassung, auf die sich auch Bearbeiter wie Schiller und Grillparzer beziehen, findet sich aber in dem Versepos des Musaios, der um 500 nach Christus lebte. In der neuen, eleganten Prosaübertragung von Marion Giebel wird dieser anrührende Text, mit bildnerischen Darstellungen des Mythos aus verschiedenen Zeiten sowie einem die geschichtlichen Zusammenhänge erläuternden Nachwort versehen, wieder auf deutsch zugänglich gemacht.

The Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis (OPD) is a form of multiaxial diagnostic and classification system based on psychodynamic principles, analogous to those based on other principles such as DSM and ICD. It is based on five axes: I = experience of illness and prerequisites for treatment, II = interpersonal relations, III = conflict, IV = structure, and V = mental and psychosomatic disorders (in line with Chapter V (F) of the ICD-10). After an initial interview lasting 1–2 hours, the clinician (or researcher) can evaluate the patient’s psychodynamics according to these axes and enter them in the checklists and evaluation forms provided. The new version, OPD-2, has been developed from a purely diagnostic system to include a set of tools and procedures for treatment planning and for measuring change, as well as for determining the appropriate main focuses of treatment and developing appropriate treatment strategies. Target Group: For psychodynamic psychotherapists, clinical psychologists, psychoanalysts, specialists in psychosomatic medicine, and psychiatrists.

Race and settler colonialism in Southern Rhodesia, 1919–79

This book offers the first comprehensive history of white workers from the end of the First World War to Zimbabwean independence in 1980. It reveals how white worker identity was constituted, examines the white labouring class as an ethnically and nationally heterogeneous formation comprised of both men and women, and emphasises the active participation of white workers in the ongoing and contested production of race. White wage labourers' experiences, both as exploited workers and as part of the privileged white minority, offer insight into how race and class co-produced one another and how boundaries fundamental to settler colonialism were regulated and policed. Based on original research conducted in Zimbabwe, South Africa and the UK, this book offers a unique theoretical synthesis of work on gender, whiteness studies, labour histories, settler colonialism, Marxism, emotions and the New African Economic History.

Made in France

Societal structures and political work

How has French society been made, by whom and why? And how in turn has it influenced the French? This book sets out the institutionalized rules and norms that continue to structure France, together with the 'political work' that has recently changed or reproduced these power relations. Exploring a range of age groups and types of social activity, including work, business, entertainment, political mobilizations and retirement, Made in France examines where significant change has occurred over the last four decades. Smith argues that while transformation has occurred in France's financial and education sectors, only relatively marginal shifts have occurred elsewhere in French society. To explain this pattern of continuity and isolated change, the book strongly nuances claims that neo-liberalism, globalization or a rise in populism have been its causes. References to these trends have impacted upon French politics to varying extents, Smith argues; however, France continues to be dominated by issues which are specific to the country and linked to its deep societal structures and history. Smith provides a comprehensive account of French society and politics and in doing so proposes an insightful analytical framework applicable to the comparative analysis of other nations.
