Northern Ireland and the politics of boredom

        Conflict, capital and culture

        by George Legg

In Northern Ireland and the Politics of Boredom, however, I offer a radically different perspective. Adopting a stimulating interdisciplinary approach, I plumb the depths of this so called 'capitalist peace'. I propose that an intertwining of capitalist ideologies with military, urban, political, and touristic attempts at conflict resolution, from the 1960s onwards, has ingrained a fractious 'politics of boredom' throughout contemporary Northern Ireland. Moving boredom away from its singular and internalised rendering in the philosophies of Martin Heidegger and Søren Kierkegaard, the 'politics of boredom' I advance develops discourses of banality that underpin post-Marxist theory from Guy Debord to McKenzie Wark. Cast in this light, I argue that boredom can teach us the ways in which capitalism creates an all pervasive atmosphere constraining collective thought and action.

Love The Way You Want To!

How a Flatworm can lead you to finding Happiness in Relationship

        by Maja Storch

Love is blind – not just to a partner’s shortcomings and faults, but often to one’s own needs as well. How can personal needs be identified, while staying true to oneself, yet still showing empathy towards the partner? How can one tell if this is Mr. or Ms. Right? How compatible are thin and thick-skinned people? In this book, Maja Storch shows the reader how to find out what their own needs are, take them seriously, articulate them, and communicate them to those they love. There’s no doubt about it: a relationship is hard work. But with this self-help book it can be fun.   Target Group: Everyone interested in long-term, happy relationships

        Shakespeare and the supernatural

by Victoria Bladen, Yan Brailowsky, Gayle Allan, Jacquelyn Bessell, Victoria Bladen, Yan Brailowsky, William C. Carroll, Bernadette Cochrane, Alexa Huang, Laurie Johnson, Pierre Kapitaniak, Imke Lichterfeld, Florence March, Maddalena Pennacchia, Chelsea Philips, Yukari Yoshihara, Christopher Wortham

Supernatural elements are of central significance in many of Shakespeare's plays, contributing to their dramatic power and intrigue. Ghosts haunt political spaces and internal psyches, witches foresee the future and disturb the present, fairies meddle with love and a magus conjures a tempest from the elements. Although written and performed for early modern audiences, for whom the supernatural, whether sacred, demonic or folkloric, was part of the fabric of everyday life, the supernatural in Shakespeare continues to enthrall audiences and readers, and maintains its power to raise a range of questions in contemporary contexts. This edited collection of twelve essays from an international range of contemporary Shakespeare scholars explores the supernatural in Shakespeare from a variety of perspectives and approaches, generating new knowledge and presenting hitherto unexplored avenues of enquiry across the Shakespearean canon.

        Disrupting White Mindfulness

Race and Racism in the Wellbeing Industry

        by Cathy-Mae Karelse

Disrupting White Mindfulness offers a timely commentary on the dominant narratives that shape the mindfulness industry - whiteness, postracialism and neoliberalism. Its positioning as 'apolitical' forges institutions that fit comfortably into increasingly divided societies. The race-gender profile of these institutions reveals a White, middle-class profile of decision-makers, educators and staff that is mirrored in its audiences. Mechanisms that recycle the industry's whiteness include corporatist pedagogies, edicts of authority, disengagement with difference and inappropriate uses of mindfulness that distance People of the Global Majority. A growing emergent movement focused on a justice-infused mindfulness and liberatory wellbeing decolonises mindfulness and de-centres whiteness. Its premise in indigenous, global South, queer knowledges leverages difference to produce multiple solutions focused on liberation. There is room for White Mindfulness to change.

        Presence

The strange science and true stories of the unseen other

        by Ben Alderson-Day

In this enthralling book, Ben Alderson-Day explores one of the most curious experiences known to humankind: the universal, disturbing sense that someone or something is there when we are alone - the feeling of an unseen presence. When and why do presences emerge? What does this feeling mean and where does it come from? And how can we even begin to understand a phenomenon that can be transformative for those who experience it and yet so hard to put into words? The answers to these questions lie in this fascinating exploration through cutting-edge research in contemporary psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience and philosophy. Taking the reader on a riveting and emotional journey, Presence offers remarkable insights into the experience of felt presence and how it relates to a range of medical conditions, including sleep paralysis, dementia and Parkinson's. This compelling story will stoke the fascination of sceptics and ardent believers alike who are drawn to the mystery of the unseen.

        Witchcraft narratives in Germany

        Rothenburg, 1561–1652

        by Alison Rowlands

Looks at why witch-trials failed to gain momentum and escalate into 'witch-crazes' in certain parts of early modern Europe. Exames the rich legal records of the German city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a city which experienced a very restrained pattern of witch-trials and just one execution for witchcraft between 1561 and 1652. Explores the social and psychological conflicts that lay behind the making of accusations and confessions of witchcraft. Offers insights into other areas of early modern life, such as experiences of and beliefs about communal conflict, magic, motherhood, childhood and illness. Offers a critique of existing explanations for the gender bias of witch-trials, and a new explanation as to why most witches were women.

        Presence

The strange science of the unseen other

        by Ben Alderson-Day

A psychologist sets out to understand the uncanny phenomenon of felt presence. We all know the feeling: you're alone but it's like there's someone there with you - a mysterious presence lurking just out of sight. Throughout history this experience has been the subject of religious and supernatural speculation. But does science have the answer? In Presence, psychologist Ben Alderson-Day digs into historical accounts and contemporary cases of 'felt presence', hunting for the key to unlock this strange phenomenon. He interviews ultrarunners and ocean rowers, who often report the sensation of being accompanied on their journeys, and examines the latest work on sleep paralysis, dementia and Parkinson's, conditions closely associated with feeling the presence of someone or something that isn't there. His findings, built on cutting-edge research from psychology and neuroscience, provide remarkable new insights into this longstanding mystery of the human mind.
