McNidder & Grace Limited was established in 2011 by publisher Andy Peden Smith. His team of professionals have most recently been joined by Caroline Peden Smith, former publishing director of Crown House Publishing. Both Andy and Caroline are publishers with an extensive background and experience in publishing high quality and award-winning books. We specialise in non-fiction and fiction titles for adults. With a particular emphasis on popular culture, our non-fiction list includes books on photography, art, music, biography, history, country pursuits and more recently health and well-being in partnership with BBC Radio 2’s Janey Lee Grace. We are also proud of our popular Railway Journeys in Art Poster to Poster series, a nine-volume set of engaging, beautifully illustrated railway travel books in collaboration with the National Railway Museum and Swann Galleries, New York. Lives of Pope Leo IX and Pope Gregory VII

The eleventh-century papal reform transformed western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV. Also included is a translation of Book to a Friend, written by Bishop Bonizo of Sutri soon after the death of Gregory VII, as well as an extract from the violently anti-Gregorian polemic of Bishop Benzo of Alba (1085) and the short biography of Leo IX composed in the papal curia in the 1090s by Bishop Bruno of Segni. These fascinating narrative sources bear witness to the startling impact of the papal reform and of the 'Investiture Contest', the conflict of empire and papacy that was one of its consequences. An essential collection of translated texts for students of medieval history.

Representing Renaissance art, c.1500-c.1600 is a study of change and continuity in the iconographies of art and the visual representation of artists during the sixteenth century, especially in Italy and the Netherlands. The issue of how, and how far, artists obtained higher status for their profession during the Renaissance is a key question for the study of the early modern period. This book considers the maintenance of well-established traditions for the visual representation of artists, and also examines the new iconographies that emerged in the sixteenth century. By highlighting art and architecture that artists designed for their personal use, including the decoration of their houses, this study provides insight into the tastes and 'ways of looking' specific to artists. By examining the visual evidence we see the opinions both of artists who expressed their views in literary texts, and additionally those of artists who did not publish their ideas in written form.

Ein Tag währt ein ganzes Leben und das Abenteuer wartet in einer sich blähenden Sommergardine und den Glasaugen der ausgestopften Eule auf dem Schrank. Sommer war es ist die Erinnerungsphantasie einer Frau aus dem Land der Kindheit. Aus einer Zeit, in der die Erwachsenen riesige Nasenlöcher haben und merkwürdige Dinge sagen, die man nur halb versteht. Vielleicht haben wir es vergessen, aber genau so war es.
