        Andrew Davies

        by Sarah Cardwell, Jonathan Bignell, Sarah Cardwell, Steven Peacock

        One of Britain's foremost TV practitioners, Andrew Davies is the creator of programmes such as 'A Very Peculiar Practice', 'To Serve Them All My Days', 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Othello' and 'The Way We Live Now'. Although best known for his adaptations of the work of writers such as Jane Austen and George Eliot, he has written numerous original drama series, single plays, films, stage plays and books. This volume offers a critical appraisal of Davies's work, and assesses his contribution to British television. Cardwell also explores the conventional notions of authorship and auteurism which are challenged by Davies's work. Can we identify Davies as the author of the varied texts attributed to him? If so, does an awareness of his authorial role aid our interpretation and evaluation of those texts? How does the phenomenon of adaptation affect the issue of authorship? How important is 'the author' to television? This book will appeal to both an academic readership, and to the many people who have taken pleasure in Davies's work. ;

        Die realen Frauen der Surrealisten

        Simone Breton, Gala Éluard, Elsa Triolet

        by Unda Hörner

        Liebe und Begehren, das waren für die Surrealisten André Breton, Paul Éluard und Louis Aragon die wahrhaft revolutionären Kräfte. Aber weil sie den weiblichen Part ausblendeten, gerieten ideale Vorstellungen und gelebte Liebe in Widerspruch zueinander.In drei einfühlsamen, untereinander verknüpften Porträts ihrer Geliebten und Ehefrauen geht Unda Hörner diesem Konflikt nach und zeigt, wie sich die drei Frauen vom Liebesideal ihrer Männer lösten.

        The Island Book of Records Volume II

        1969-70

        by Neil Storey

        The second volume of this highly collectable series, covering the pivotal years of 1969-70. The Island Book of Records Volume II documents the years 1969-70, during which Island sought to build on its success with the Spencer Davis Group by seeking out new British rock talent. By the end of the period, Island was emerging as a major British label, one that could boast releases from Jethro Tull, Nick Drake, King Crimson, John and Beverley Martyn, Fairport Convention and Cat Stevens. Featuring material from recent interviews and from media interviews of the time, and including a comprehensive discography of 45s, The Island Book of Records Volume II is lavishly illustrated with gig adverts (very many at venues that no longer exist), concert tickets, flyers, international LP variants, labels, LP and 45 adverts and other ephemera collector's dream.

        Lovely Rita

        by Goosen, Frank

        Drei Schicksale, ein Tresen, hundert Geschichten In Frank Goosens neuem Roman reisen wir durch die Lebensgeschichten von drei unkonventionellen Frauen und kehren dabei immer wieder an den Kneipentresen zurück, an dem sich die Schicksale kreuzen. Gewohnt urkomisch beschreibt der Autor ein langsam verschwindendes Biotop und erzählt voller Wärme eine große Geschichte.  Die legendäre Kneipe Haus Himmelreich, eine der letzten ihrer Art im ganzen Ruhrgebiet, soll schließen – ein Jammer! Das nimmt der Erzähler zum Anlass, die finalen Stunden in der Kneipe zu verbringen: Bei seiner Recherche für einen Artikel begegnet er vielen skurrilen Stammgästen, die so einiges zu erzählen haben. Aber der wahre Geist der Kneipe ist die Wirtin Rita Urbaniak, die den ganzen Abend über gar nicht persönlich auftaucht und doch gehörig von sich reden macht: Sie betreibt das Haus Himmelreich schon seit den 1970ern, auch wenn sie eigentlich mal was ganz anderes machen wollte. Außerdem hat sie die Tochter ihrer Schwester Chris, die sich irgendwann in die weite Welt verabschiedet hat, aufgezogen. Aber wo bleibt Rita überhaupt? Sie darf doch das Finale nicht verpassen!
