Hyde Park (1632) is one of the best-loved comedies of James Shirley, considered to be one of the most important Caroline dramatists. The play showcases strong female characters who excel at rebuking the outlandish courtship of various suitors. Shirley's comic setting, London's Hyde Park, offers ample opportunity for witty dialogue and sport - including foot and horse races - across three love plots. This is the first critical edition of the play, including a wide-ranging introduction and extensive commentary and textual notes. Paying special attention to the culture of Caroline London and its stage, the Revels Plays edition unpicks Shirley's politics of courtship and consent while also underlining the play's dynamics of class and power. A detailed performance history traces productions from 1632, across the Restoration to the present day, including that of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987. A textual history of the play's first quarto determines how it was printed and what relationship Hyde Park has to other texts by Shirley from the same publishers.

Sufidichtung und spanische Mystik schließlich, in der prägnanten Ausformung des Juan de la Cruz, waren es, die ihn in seiner tiefsten existentiellen Krise aus Angst und Enge geführt haben. Raffend, in träumerischer Plötzlichkeit des Wechsels, nimmt uns der Roman zu Räumen der Inquisition und der Repression ebenso mit wie zu Bordellszenen, ideologischen Familienfeiern, dem heimlich-peinlichen Wirken des Zensors – in immer neuen Bildern gräbt Goytisolo sich in jenes Dunkelgebiet von gesellschaftlicher Unterdrückung und radikalindividuellem Ausbruch. Indem der vielgestaltige Erzähler des Romans sich dem geistigen Abenteuer des Sufismus und der Mystik hingibt, gelangt er – jenseits der »dunklen Nacht der Seele« – vom verlorenen Paradies bis hin zum wiedergefundenen Garten Eden. Juan Goytisolo hat nie ein indifferentes Buch geschrieben. Am wenigsten ist es dieses.

Erstmals erschien der vorliegende Band 1934. Die von W. Hartmann und J. Kull stammenden illuminierten Kupfer wurden der 1819 in Zürich erschienenen »Beschreibung und Abbildung der künstlichen Nester und Eier der Vögel, welche in der Schweiz, in Deutschland und in den angränzenden Ländern brüten« von H. R. Schinz entnommen.Das sehr schöne kleine Buch zeigt den jeweiligen Vogel bei seinem kunstvollen Nestbau: Zaunkönig, Rotkehlchen, Weidenlaubsänger, Schwanzmeise, Goldhähnchen, Samtköpfchen, Gartengrasmücke, Sumpfrohrsänger und viele mehr. So vielfältig die Vogelgestalten, so verschiedenartig sind auch die Formen der Nester, die gebaut und hier vorgezeigt werden. »Der Vogel baut sein Nest nicht bewußt nach dem Muster seiner eigenen Wiege oder nach Anleitungen seiner Artgenossen. Brüten wir künstlich einen Vogel aus und ziehen ihn so auf, daß er niemals ein Vogelnest zu sehen bekommt, so wird er doch, wenn seine Zeit naht, eine Brutstätte bauen, die sich in nichts von denen seiner Sippe unterscheidet. Die größten Nestbaukünstler finden wir unter unseren Singvögeln. Sie zeigen uns die höchste Meisterschaft tierischer Baukunst überhaupt. Es ist so, als wolle die Natur ihre Geschöpfe noch übertreffen.«
