Der 18. Juli 1936 markiert, mit dem Aufstand des größten Teils der spanischen Armee, den Beginn dessen, was als »Spanischer Bürgerkrieg« in die Geschichte Europas eingehen sollte. Am Ende von dreiunddreißig Monaten militärischer, politischer, sozialer und ideologischer Auseinandersetzung konnte Franco am 1. April 1939 den Sieg der von ihm befehligten Truppen verkünden. Die Ereignisse in diesem Zeitraum (und die Folgen für Spanien und Europa) wurden, wie es angesichts des Sachverhalts nicht anders sein konnte, äußerst kontrovers beurteilt – eine Debatte, die in den dreißiger Jahren sehr heftig geführt wurde und gegenwärtig keineswegs beendet ist. Angesichts dieser politischen, wissenschaftlichen und publizistischen Situation ist das Unterfangen, das führende spanische Historiker unter der Leitung Manuel Tuñón de Laras verwirklicht haben, kaum hoch genug einzuschätzen: Sie legen eine Bestandsaufnahme dessen vor, was fünfzig Jahre nach Beginn des Putsches und mehr als zehn Jahre nach Francos Tod über den Spanischen Bürgerkrieg an historischem Wissen eruierbar ist. Diesen Anspruch, Umfassendes zu ihrem Thema zu sagen, lösen die Autoren ein, indem sie alle Bereiche der damaligen spanischen Gesellschaft untersuchen: von den militärischen Kämpfen bis zu den in deren Verlauf sich ändernden Ideologien, von der sozialen Entwicklung in den Städten und auf dem Land bis zu den Auswirkungen der Interventionen fremder Länder, von den Auseinandersetzungen im republikanischen Lager bis zu der sich herausbildenden Vormachtstellung Francos. The career of Wisconsin-born Joseph Losey spanned over four decades and several countries. A self-proclaimed Marxist and veteran of the 1930s Soviet agit-prop theater, he collaborated with Bertholt Brecht before directing noir B-pictures in Hollywood. A victim of McCarthyism, he later crossed the Atlantic to direct a series of seminal British films such as "Time Without Pity," "Eve," "The Servant," and "The Go-Between," which mark him as one of the cinema's greatest baroque stylists. His British films reflect on exile and the outsider's view of a class-bound society in crisis through a style rooted in the European art house tradition of Resnais and Godard. Gardner employs recent methodologies from cultural studies and poststructural theory, exploring and clarifying the films' uneasy tension between class and gender, and their explorations of fractured temporality.

Er studierte zunächst Jura, arbeitete jedoch nur kurze Zeit als Rechtsanwalt. Statt dessen begann er in Madrid für verschiedene Medien journalistisch tätig zu werden. Seine erste literarische Veröffentlichung war der Gedichtband La lentitud des los bueyes von 1979, der den "Premio de Poesía Antonio G. de Lama" erhielt. Eine Essay-Sammlung El entierro de Genarín. Evangelio apócrifo del último heterodoxo español folgte 1981 und ein Jahr später weitere Gedichte unter dem Titel Memoria de la nieve, die mit dem "Premio Jorge Guillén" ausgezeichnet wurden. Neben den drei Romanen, Luna de lobos (1985, dt. Wolfsmond, 1991), La lluvia amarilla (1988, dt. Der gelbe Regen, 1991) und Escenas de cine mudo (1994, dt. Stummfilmszenen, 1998) sind von Llamazares auch journalistische Arbeiten und Reiseberichte in Buchform erschienen. Luna de lobos, der erste Roman, war in Spanien ein großer literarischer Erfolg und wurde zwei Jahre später unter demselben Titel, nach einem von Llamazares verfaßten Drehbuch, verfilmt. Die Erfahrung des Verlustes seines Geburtsortes - 1968 mußte das Dorf einem Stausee weichen - war prägend für das literarische Schaffen von Julio Llamazares. Die verlassene, vom Aussterben bedrohte ländliche Bergregion Leóns und Asturiens bildet immer wieder den Hintergrund seiner Werke. Im Zentrum steht das Verschwinden von Traditionen und eine Sensibilität, die die Natur als vom Menschen unabhängige Einheit betrachtet. In der Gegenüberstellung von ländlichem und städtischem Leben wird jedoch die Natur nicht idyllisch verklärt - sie ist vielmehr bestimmt von Einsamkeit, Überlebenskampf und Sterben. Sein literarisches Werk, das auch als poetische Reflexion über die Einsamkeit gelesen werden kann, hat Julio Llamazares zu einem herausragenden Vertreter der jüngeren Schriftsteller-Generation im postfranquistischen Spanien gemacht.

Er übersetzte u.a. Werke von Anna Achmatowa, Andrej Platonow, Wladimir Majakowski, Gennadij Ajgi, Marina Zwetajewa, Joseph Brodsky, Alexander Solschenizyn und Vladimir Nabokov ins Spanische. Mit seiner russischen Frau und seiner Tochter lebt er in Mexiko-Stadt, wo er russische Geschichte lehrt. Prieto ist der Autor der Romane Enciclopedia de una vida en Rusia (1998, Neuausgabe 2004) und Livadia (1999). Er veröffentlichte außerdem das Reisetagebuch Treinta días en Moscú (2002) und den Erzählband El tartamudo y la rusa (2002). Sein Roman Livadia wurde bislang ins Englische, Französische, Niederländische, Italienische und Hebräische übersetzt.

Medicine, masculinity, and the Gothic at the fin-de-siècle

Victorian demons provides the first extensive exploration of largely middle-class masculinities in crisis at the fin de siècle. It analyses how ostensibly controlling models of masculinity became demonised in a variety of literary and medical contexts, revealing the period to be much more ideologically complex than has hitherto been understood, and makes a significant contribution to Gothic scholarship. Andrew Smith demonstrates how a Gothic language of monstrosity, drawn from narratives such as 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' and 'Dracula', increasingly influenced a range of medical and cultural contexts, destabilising these apparently dominant masculine scripts. He provides a coherent analysis of a range of examples relating to masculinity drawn from literary, medical, legal and sociological contexts, including Joseph Merrick ('The Elephant Man'), the Whitechapel murders of 1888, Sherlock Holmes's London, the writings and trials of Oscar Wilde, theories of degeneration and medical textbooks on syphilis. ;

British travelogues, 1850-1900

Works of travel have been the subject of increasingly sophisticated studies in recent years. This book undermines the conviction with which nineteenth-century British writers talked about darkest Africa. It places the works of travel within the rapidly developing dynamic of Victorian imperialism. Images of Abyssinia and the means of communicating those images changed in response to social developments in Britain. As bourgeois values became increasingly important in the nineteenth century and technology advanced, the distance between the consumer and the product were justified by the scorn of African ways of eating. The book argues that the ambiguities and ambivalence of the travellers are revealed in their relation to a range of objects and commodities mentioned in narratives. For instance, beads occupy the dual role of currency and commodity. The book deals with Henry Morton Stanley's expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, and attempts to prove that racial representations are in large part determined by the cultural conditions of the traveller's society. By looking at Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, it argues that the text is best read as what it purports to be: a kind of travel narrative. Only when it is seen as such and is regarded in the context of the fin de siecle can one begin to appreciate both the extent and the limitations of Conrad's innovativeness.
