Das graue Haus hingegen steht für Alter, Verfall und Unglück und ist mit der Person des Großvaters verknüpft. Man kann die beiden autobiographischen Romane, es sind Bangs bekannteste Werke, jeden für sich lesen, aber sie gehören zusammen.
