Humanities & Social SciencesSeptember 2025Bloodsuckers of the Commonwealth
Monopolies, petitioning, and the public sphere in early modern England
by Ellen Paterson
This book offers the first in-depth analysis of anti-monopoly petitioning in late-Elizabethan and Jacobean England. Drawing on a range of manuscript petitions, it reveals the centrality of the issues of monopoly and corporatism for the politicisation of a range of subjects between 1590-1625. Both Elizabeth I and James I liberally granted monopolies and charters as a fiscal device. Petitioning emerged as the main way through which subjects protested these intrusions on their trades and livelihoods. Whilst this activity occurred throughout the realm, it was especially pronounced in the city of London. Members of London's livery companies, bodies which held exclusive rights to trade, petitioned for and against monopolies and charters. Bloodsuckers of the Commonwealth offers a fresh perspective on political culture in this well-studied period by arguing that economic policies generated conflicts, contests, and participation in a nascent public sphere.

September 1979Reflexionen über die Universalgrammatik
by Helen Leuninger

Literature & Literary StudiesMarch 2025The Catholicism of literature in the age of the Book of Common Prayer
Poetry, plays, works, 1558-1689
by Thomas Rist
Offering a complete reading of English Literature throughout 1558-1689, this book demonstrates the continuity of Roman Catholicism in English Literature from the accession of Elizabeth I to the deposing of James II. Rist shows that poetry and plays promoted Roman Catholic ideas in a Biblicist age which established the Church of England through the Book of Common Prayer. From the very idea of literary works to chapters on the Eucharist, Purgatory, Christian worship and the Virgin Mary, Rist joins together major and minor authors of the era to present English Literature afresh. Important literary figures include William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton, Queen Henrietta Maria, John Donne, John Dryden, Robert Herrick, Margaret Cavendish and Aphra Behn.

The ArtsJanuary 2019Coline Serreau
by Brigitte Rollet
Coline Serreau became famous in 1985 when her third film, Trois hommes et un couffin (Three Men and a Baby), the most successful French film of the 1980s. She was already known in France for her major contribution to feminist documentaries with the acclaimed Mais qu'est-ce qu'elles veulent?, a series of interviews with French women made between 1975 and 1977. She is now a key figure in French cinema and drama, with international hits including Romuald et Juliette (1989) and La Crise (1992). This appraisal of her work situates her films within the social, cultural and political context of France since May 1968, and assesses th emajor impact of the women's movement on French society and culture. Politics and sexual politics, two key aspects of Serreau's films and plays, are thoroughly examined. This book also considers the cultural influences of her work, and provides an overview of her films and filmic skills. Special attention is given to comedy, the cinematographic genre favoured by Serreau and the French audience, which is apprehended from a historical and gendered perspective. The clarity of the style and the wide-ranging analysis of Serreau's films and filming techniques make this book relevant both to students of film and film enthusiasts.

April 2018Die Tyrannei des Schmetterlings
Roman
by Schätzing, Frank
Cornucopia of wishes? Or Pandora’s box? Luther Opoku is the sheriff of Sierra County, a sleepy gold mining region in the California Mountains, where he has to deal with petty crimes, the manufacture of illicit drugs and a constant lack of staff. Three hundred miles further west in the Silicon Valley, IT visionaries are competing for the creation of the first ultra-intelligent computer that is supposed to solve the major problems of humanity. When a biologist gets killed in mysterious circumstances in the Sierra County forests, Luther comes to realize that his natural idyll has long since become a testing ground for idiosyncratic experiments. The investigation is taking on surreal features and he soon begins to doubt his own sanity. Dead people come to life, time is dissolving – and that is only the beginning of an odyssey beyond the limits of the imaginable... In his new thriller Die Tyrannei des Schmetterlings (“The Tyranny of the Butterfly”), Frank Schätzing outlines the scenario of a technology that will radically change our lives, with the potential to dramatically improve it – or destroy us all: artificial intelligence.

September 2023Being Able to Stop
Against the delusion of permanent growth
by Edited by Jean-Pierre Wils
We moderns were the inhabitants of an age of impetuous forward movement and voracious discontent. Our main virtue was to increase our reach. Increasing our having and accelerating our being were the signposts towards the future. We just could not get enough. Using the blinkers of ignorance and self-anaesthesia, however, we managed to forget the tremendous costs incurred by this intoxication. Now disillusionment has set in. We look to the future with anxiety. We know that we have long since crossed a line and that a revision of our lifestyle is imminent. We have a bad feeling, and doubts about progress often give way to anger and rebellion. Which stocks of the modern narrative should we defend; which would we do better to let go? How will we even "be able to stop"? The path to a different society needs an attractive goal, because without the prospect of a different, better life, we will not move forward. We should start practising immediately. There is no time to lose.
