County Galway and the Irish Free State, 1922–32

The West must wait presents a new perspective on the development of the Irish Free State. It extends the regional historical debate beyond the Irish revolution and raises a series of challenging questions about post-civil war society in Ireland. Through a detailed examination of key local themes - land, poverty, politics, emigration, the status of the Irish language, the influence of radical republicans and the authority of the Catholic Church - it offers a probing analysis of the socio-political realities of life in the new state. This book opens up a new dimension by providing a rural contrast to the Dublin-centred views of Irish politics. Significantly, it reveals the level of deprivation in local Free State society with which the government had to confront in the west. Rigorously researched, it explores the disconnect between the perceptions of what independence would deliver and what was achieved by the incumbent Cumann na nGaedheal administration.

Spenser's Una as the invisible Church

In this study, Kathryn Walls challenges the standard identification of Una with the post-Reformation English Church, arguing that she is, rather, Augustine's City of God - the invisible Church, whose membership is known only to God. Una's story (its Tudor resonances notwithstanding) therefore embraces that of the Synagogue before the Incarnation as well as that of the Church in the time of Christ and thereafter. It also allegorises the redemptive process that sustains the true Church. Una is fallible in canto I. Subsequently, however, she comes to embody divine perfection. Her transformation depends upon the intervention of the lion as Christ. Convinced of the consistency and coherence of Spenser's allegory, Walls offers fresh interpretations of Abessa (as Synagoga), of the fauns and satyrs (the Gentiles), and of Una's dwarf (adiaphoric forms of worship). She also reinterprets Spenser's marriage metaphor, clarifying the significance of Red Cross as Una's spouse in the final canto.

»Willkommen an Bord Däumling du, Menschlein, brandneu. / Zierliche Nymphe, zitternd wie Espenlaub, Milchtrinker, Wicht. / Alles dank dir, Glückskind, beginnt nun, gut griechisch, mit Eu .../ Wie sie Dich halten, Krabbenfang, ängstlich, daß nichts zerbricht«, begrüßt der gerade Vater gewordene Dichter die Tochter, wohl wissend um die eigene Vernarrtheit, die anderen womöglich fragwürdig ist. Aber was liegt näher, als sich dem Ansturm der Erwartungen, den Gebärden und dem Geschrei des Neugeborenen ganz hinzugeben? – Die Gedichte dieses Bandes, »wie von selbst entstanden und halb belustigt, halb verwundert aufgezeichnet, halten die Momente fest, in denen ein Kind zum ersten Mal ... zumeist noch unbewußt, sich einübt ins Leben«. Movens des Schreibens dieser Verse war für Grünbein die Neugier auf etwas, was der Selbsterfahrung unzugänglich bleibt: Niemandes Erinnerung reicht zurück in die ersten zwanzig Monate des eigenen Lebens, und so sah er sich bei der Betrachtung der Tochter immer auch sich selbst gegenüber, mehr noch, er blickte ins Innere der Lebensuhr.

From there it moves on to explore corruption's causes, its consequences and how it can be tackled - before discovering how these things are playing out in the established liberal democracies, in the former communist regimes and in the newly industrialised and 'developing' world. On the way it takes a couple of detours - first, to explore corruption's mechanisms and dynamics and second to survey the scandals to which it may give rise. The book is therefore offered as an informative 'travel guide' of potential interest to journalists and policy makers as well as to students and academics.

Pablo Neruda's Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada (1924) is the most widely read and best loved book of poetry ever written in Spanish. Its verses can be recited by heart by millions of Latin Americans from every background and walk of life, and it has become almost a bible for young lovers. Yet despite, or perhaps because of this immense popular success, it has received scant attention from scholars, often being studied out of context and in relatively superficial fashion. This new critical edition - the first to include critical notes in English - argues that the book constitutes a critical juncture in the young Neruda's development as a poet, and that the poems are as much painstakingly wrought experiments in style, language and form as they are outpourings of youthful passion. A detailed introduction in English demonstrates that the Viente poemas represent the culmination of complex and sometimes fraught poetic apprenticeship, significant traces of which can be found in the poems themselves. This is followed by a series of commentaries which offer close readings of all twenty-one poems, an extensive bibliography, a selected vocabulary, and a list of key rhetorical and metrical terms. ;

Diese Untersuchung des gesellschaftlichen Selbstverständnisses der gegenwärtigen Kunst und der Bedingungen künstlerischer Produktion in der spätkapitalistischen Industriegesellschaft, die an der Basis einsetzt, bei der Produktivkraft des Künstlers selbst, zielt sowohl auf Erkenntnis wie auf Veränderung des gegenwärtigen Zustandes. Sie geht davon aus, daß materialistische Kunsttheorie auch unter den heute gegebenen Bedingungen nicht aus einer Distanz heraus betrieben werden kann, die die Produzenten zu Objekten der Theorie und des Kunstbetriebes macht. Erst eine Methode der Untersuchung, die, der Form einer Diskussion angenähert, es den Künstlern möglich macht, sich als subjektiv gewendete Materie im widersprüchlichen Gesellschaftsprozeß selbst zu erfahren, emanzipiert sie von ihrer Objektrolle, an der sie vereinzelt und schweigend zugrunde zu gehen drohen. Fünf junge Sozialwissenschaftler haben in den letzten Jahren 130 junge Berliner Künstler und Kunststudenten – Maler, Bildhauer, Schauspieler, Musiker, Sänger, Filmer – in langen und intensiven Diskussionsinterviews danach gefragt, wie sie ihre Position und Rolle in der Gesellschaft sehen, wie sie produzieren und sich reproduzieren. Die Ergebnisse dieser Interviews werden in qualitativen Inhaltsanalysen vorgestellt. In ihrem theoretischen Teil geht die Arbeit auf aktuelle Fragen der künstlerischen Produktion und des Gesellschaftsbildes von künstlerisch Tätigen ein.
