        Once upon a time in Italy

        by Fulvio, Luca Di

        Rome in 1860 - with the exciting age of the Risorgimento as an atmospheric backdropLuca Di Fulvio's new novel is a powerful emotional epic about solidarity, self-discovery, homeland, family, love, and life dreams. The story begins in 1860, with the plot set mainly in Rome during the last phase of the Italian unification movement, the Risorgimento. Luca Di Fulvio creates a highly emotional, mentally cinematic epic with strong, distinctive characters. An orphan boy who wants to use his camera to change the way people see the world. A circus girl with a burning interest in politics. A countess who gives the gift of freedom to others. Three people whom fate brings to Rome in 1870, the pulsating heart of Italy on its path to becoming a nation state. As their paths cross in the midst of this city of promise, their dreams seem to be interwoven with magical bands. But the dazzling city of Rome presents the three with unexpected challenges. One day, when a dramatic event shakes the Eternal City, they are threatened with losing everything they hold dear. A highly emotional epic about three unforgettable characters, and a visually stunning story about new beginnings, the power of love, and a great longing for security in a world where one person stands up for the other. Graham Swift

        by Daniel Lea, Susan Williams

        This book offers an accessible critical introduction to the work of Graham Swift, one of Britain's most significant contemporary authors. Through detailed readings of his novels and short stories from 'The Sweet Shop Owner' (1980) to 'The Light of Day' (2003), Daniel Lea lucidly addresses the key themes of history, loss, masculinity and ethical redemption, to present a fresh approach to Swift. This study proposes that one of the side-effects of modernity has been the destruction of traditional pathways of self and collective belief, leading to a loss of understanding between individuals about their duties to each other and to society. Swift's writing returns repeatedly to the question of what we can believe in when all the established markers of identity - family, community, gender, profession, history - have become destabilised. Lea suggests that Swift increasingly moves towards a notion of redemption through a lived ethical practice as the only means of finding solace in a world lacking a central symbolic authority. ;

        The labour movement in Lebanon

        Power on hold

        by Lea Bou Khater

        The labour movement in Lebanon: Power on hold narrates the history of the Lebanese labour movement from the early twentieth century to today. Bou Khater demonstrates that trade unionism in the country has largely been a failure, for reasons including state interference, tactical co-optation, and the strategic use of sectarianism by an oligarchic elite, together with the structural weakness of a service-based laissez-faire economy. Drawing on a vast body of Arabic-language primary sources and difficult-to-access archives, the book's conclusions are significant not only for trade unionism, but also for new forms of workers' organisations and social movements in Lebanon and beyond. The Lebanese case study presented here holds significant implications for the wider Arab world and for comparative studies of labour. This authoritative history of the labour movement in Lebanon is vital reading for scholars of trade unionism, Lebanese politics, and political economy.

        Briefe von einer imaginären Reise

        Roman

        by Lea Goldberg, Lydia Böhmer

        Eine junge Frau, Ruth, flieht im Herbst 1934 vor einer unglücklichen Liebe. Aus Berlin, Köln, Brüssel, Brügge, Ostende, Paris und Marseille schreibt sie an Immanuel, den Mann, den sie mehr liebt als er sie. Doch sie reist nur in der Phantasie in diese Städte, es sind Briefe von einer imaginären Reise. Die Stationen der Reise sind in diesen Schilderungen als reale wie als geistige Orte präsent, Beobachtungen aus dem nazistischen Berlin etwa mischen sich mit Gedanken zur Literatur und Kunst und vielem mehr. Die persönliche Liebesgeschichte verbindet sich mit scharfsichtigen Beschreibungen vom Europa Mitte der dreißiger Jahre – es ist auch der Herbst Europas vor der großen Katastrophe. So sprechen diese Briefe nicht nur von der unglücklichen Liebe Ruths zu Immanuel, sondern auch von der großen unglücklichen Liebe vieler Juden zur europäischen Kultur. Die Gewißheit des notwendigen Abschieds durchzieht diesen poetischen, klugen, melancholischen Roman in Briefen – zuerst veröffentlicht 1936/37, kurz nach Lea Goldbergs Einwanderung ins damalige Palästina.

        Ukraine's fateful years 2013–2019

        Vol. 1: The Maidan uprising in 2013/2014 Vol. 2: The annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbass

        by Winfried Schneider-Deters

        — Comprehensive and detailled analysis of the Euromaidan and the ongoing war in Ukraine — Brussels versus Moscow, Russian aggression and geopolitical interests — China's role in a new East-West conflict The years between 2013 and 2019 were almost as significant for Ukraine as the attainment of independence in 1991, as this very independence was in danger of being lost again after the Euromaidan. The nationwide popular uprising against the regime of President Yanukovych had led to a change of power: the former parliamentary opposition formed a new government, resulting in a loss of influence for Russia. Russian agents therefore tried to bring about a "Crimea scenario", another secession in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine. The resulting "Ukraine conflict", often called a civil war, is in fact a Russian war of attrition against Ukraine. President Putin intends to resolve it on his terms in the Minsk process: through a de facto "autonomous" part of the Donbass in the Ukrainian state, independent of Kiev, as a lever for Russian political influence. Winfried Schneider- Deters, a renowned expert on Ukraine, analyses narratively and in detail the events from 2013 to 2019 and places the Russian- Ukrainian conflict in the context of the dawning "Chinese century".

        Pragmatik als Basis von Semantik und Syntax

        by Hans Julius Schneider

        Schneider geht von der Einsicht aus, daß das Sprechen und die Sprache nicht als ein bloßer Ausdruck eines losgelösten Bewußtseinsprozesses, sondern als ein Handeln verstanden werden müssen (Peirce, Mead, Wittgenstein, Searle). Seine Untersuchung will die Frage beantworten, welche Konsequenzen diese Einsicht für die gegenwärtig diskutierten linguistischen Theorien hat. Genauer: In welchem Licht erscheint, wenn man diese Einsicht ernst nimmt, das Verhältnis der Komponenten Syntax, Semantik und Pragmatik zueinander? Schneider fragt dabei von der Semantik aus. Wie kann eine linguistische Semantik aussehen und welche Rolle hat sie innerhalb der linguistischen Theorie zu spielen? Er behandelt die verschiedenen Konzeptionen der interpretativen Semantik und zeigt, wie Probleme linguistischer Theoriebildung mit sprachphilosophischen Fragen verkettet sind. Seine Hauptthesen lauten: Die semantische Komponente einer Sprachtheorie muß nicht nur die Basis für die Syntax abgeben, sondern Semantik und Syntax müssen pragmatisch begründet werden. Das auf formalistischem Weg entwickelte Maß an logischer Exaktheit darf dabei nicht ohne Not aufgegeben werden. Es geht vielmehr gerade darum, einen Zusammenhang zwischen sprachlichem Handeln (pragmatischen Funktionen) und formalen Beschreibungsmitteln (syntaktischen Funktionen) herzustellen.
