        Evolution and Health

        How Do Lifestyle and Diet Inflence Medicine and Our Health?

        by Nicole Bender, Lotte Habermann-Horstmeier (Eds.)

        Today, we live in a new, anthropogenic environment that differs signifcantly from the environments to which we have adapted in the course of our evolution. This has signifcant effects on us humans, our health, and our social interaction. But how does the complex interaction between humans and the environment work from an evolutionary perspective? How does evolution affect our biology and behavior? What role do genetic and epigenetic aspects play here? And what inflence does this have on the development of diseases such as diabetes mellitus type 2, cardiovascular diseases, allergies, autoimmune diseases or mental disorders? The book attempts to provide answers to these complex questions and allows an exciting evolutionary view of our future with new approaches for individual lifestyle opportunities, but also for future public health measures.

        Leprosy and identity in the Middle Ages

        From England to the Mediterranean

        by Elma Brenner, François-Olivier Touati

        For the first time, this volume explores the identities of leprosy sufferers and other people affected by the disease in medieval Europe. The chapters, including contributions by leading voices such as Luke Demaitre, Carole Rawcliffe and Charlotte Roberts, challenge the view that people with leprosy were uniformly excluded and stigmatised. Instead, they reveal the complexity of responses to this disease and the fine line between segregation and integration. Ranging across disciplines, from history to bioarchaeology, Leprosy and identity in the Middle Ages encompasses post-medieval perspectives as well as the attitudes and responses of contemporaries. Subjects include hospital care, diet, sanctity, miraculous healing, diagnosis, iconography and public health regulation. This richly illustrated collection presents previously unpublished archival and material sources from England to the Mediterranean.

        Haemophilia

        Guidelines for pharmacists

        by Dr. Carmen Escuriola Ettingshausen and Nico Kraft

        With the introduction of emicizumab (Hemlibra®) onto the market in February 2018, the advising of patients with blood clotting disorders entered the realm of the pharmacy. After the German law for greater safety in the supply of medicines (GSAV) came into force in August 2020, all drugs for the specific treatment of blood clotting disorders associated with haemophilia – i.e., also products containing clotting factors – are distributed through pharmacies. This change in the law represents an opportunity and at the same time a challenge for pharmacies. A physician and a pharmacist answer questions about the fundamentals of the disease and how to handle its treatment: ■ What causes haemophilia and how is it manifested in patients? ■ Which drugs are used and how is treatment given? ■ What needs to be observed when supplying patients via the pharmacy? Patient, Haemophilia Centre, Pharmacy – seize the opportunity as a pharmacy and establish your position as a competent and reliable partner in this relationship.

        Find me in the Storm

        by Kira Mohn

        Not a single soul as far as the eye can see. Just sea, cliffs and the beach. And a lighthouse. It’s a wondrously beautiful place – not that Airin has a chance to enjoy it. The lighthouse has been converted into a cosy living space available for rent, and 24-year-old Airin has to look after the property while at the same time running her own bed and breakfast in Castledunn. It’s a lot of work for one person, but normally everything runs smoothly. Until Joshua, the nephew of the lighthouse owner, moves in. Arrogant and priggish, he complains ceaselessly about everything. Airin feels like strangling him. Or kissing him. Who cares, just as long as he stops talking!   16+ years The third volume of a unique romance trilogy about three young women, a lighthouse and love. All titles can be read separately! Rousing characters and a fine dry humor For all fans of Mona Kasten, Laura Kneidl and Colleen Hoover! More than 60.000 copies of this series were sold!

        Consumerism and the Co-operative movement in modern British history

        Taking stock

        by Lawrence Black, Nicole Robertson

        Despite the abundance and quality of recent historical writing on consumerism, it cannot be said that the modern Co-operative movement (Co-op) has been well served. It has also been by-passed in studies that locate Britons' identity in their consumption. The reasons for this can be found in the widely perceived decline of the Co-op since the 1950s, but also in various historiographical agendas that have resulted in its relative invisibility in modern British history. This book, by demonstrating the variety of broader issues that can be addressed through the Co-op and the vibrancy of new historical research into consumption, seeks to remedy this. Taking stock, both of the Co-op in a broader context and of new approaches to the history of consumption, combines the work of leading authorities on the Co-op with recent scholarly research. It explores the Co-op's distinctive interface between everyday issues and grander idealistic concerns. The chapters intersect to examine a broad range of themes, notably: the politics of consumerism including consumer protection, ethical and fair trading and alternatives to corporate commerce; design and advertising; the Co-op's relations with other components of the labour movement; and its ideology, image and memory. The collection looks at the Co-operative movement locally (through specific case studies), nationally and also in comparison to the European movement. This collection will appeal to academics, researchers, teachers and students of the economic, cultural and political history of twentieth-century Britain. It will also be of interest to academics and students of business studies, and co-operative members themselves. ;
