— 200th anniversary of the birth of Jean-Henri Fabre on 21 December 2023 — First all-encompassing biography of the entomologist — Biodiversity as a hot topic Jean-Henri Fabre (1823–1915) was a French teacher, scientist and researcher. At a time when insects were not among the preferred biological objects of study (and if they were, it was only for them to be collected, pinned and identified), Fabre began to conduct behavioural research on insects. This was not appreciated until very late in his life, so Fabre and his family were largely destitute most of the time. Stephan Krall provides a very personal account of this extraordinary and passionate researcher of insects, spiders and scorpions, who managed to publish scientific documents, complete his doctorate and write books on the side. Today he is considered as one of the founding fathers of the behavioural biology of insects.

Why do multinational mining corporations use participation to undermine resistance? Do the struggles of local communities, activists and NGOs matter on a global scale? Why are there so many different global standards in mining? This book develops a new critical political economy approach to studying extractive accumulation, drawing on three detailed Indonesian cases to explain how participatory mechanisms continuously reshape and are reshaped by community-corporate conflict. Findings highlight feedback between local social relations, conflict, transnational activism, crises of legitimacy and global governance. The author argues that corporate social responsibility, community development, 'gender-mainstreaming' and environmental monitoring are neither simple outcomes of corporate ethics nor mere greenwashing strategies. Rather, participation is a mechanism to undermine resistance and create social relations amenable to extractive accumulation.

Hermann Hesse, geboren am 2.7.1877 in Calw/Württemberg als Sohn eines baltendeutschen Missionars und der Tochter eines württembergischen Indologen, starb am 9.8.1962 in Montagnola bei Lugano. Er wurde 1946 mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur, 1955 mit dem Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet. Nach einer Buchhändlerlehre war er seit 1904 freier Schriftsteller, zunächst in Gaienhofen am Bodensee, später im Tessin. Er ist einer der bekanntesten deutschen Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts.
