Humanities & Social SciencesApril 2010World Bank Group interactions with environmentalists
Changing international organisation identities
by Susan Park, Mikael Anderssen, Duncan Liefferink
This book shows how environmentalists have shaped the world's largest multilateral development lender, investment financier and political risk insurer to take up sustainable development. The book challenges an emerging consensus over international organisational change to argue that international organisations (IOs) are influenced by their social structure and may change their practices to reflect previously antithetical norms such as sustainable development. This important text locates sources of organisational change with environmentalists, thus demonstrating the ways in which non-state actors can effect change within large intergovernmental organisations through socialisation. It combines a theoretically sophisticated account of international organisation change with detailed empirical evidence of change in one issue area across three institutions. The book will be of interest to academics, postgraduate and upper undergraduate students in international relations, international political economy, environmental politics, development and globalisation studies and geography as well as policy makers, international bureaucrats and development practitioners. ;

Humanities & Social SciencesJuly 2013EU foreign and security policy in Bosnia
The politics of coherence and effectiveness
by Ana Juncos, Emil Kirchner, Thomas Christiansen
This book represents the first ever comprehensive study of the EU's foreign and security policy in Bosnia. Drawing on a wealth of fresh empirical material, it demonstrates that institutions are a key variable in explaining levels of common foreign security policy (CFSP) coherence and effectiveness over time. In doing so, it also sheds new light on the role that intergovernmental, bureaucratic and local political contestation have played in the formulation and implementation of a European foreign policy. The study concludes that the EU's involvement in Bosnia has not only had a significant impact on this Balkan country in its path from stabilisation to integration, but has also transformed the EU, its foreign and security policy and shaped the development of the EU's international identity along the way. The book will be of great interest to researchers and students of EU politics, International Relations and Bosnian politics. ;

Humanities & Social SciencesApril 2022In defence of councillors
by Colin Copus
In defence of councillors is an unashamed defence of local representative democracy and of those elected to serve as councillors from the often ill-informed, ill-judged and inaccurate criticism made by the media, government and public, of councillors' personal, political and professional roles. By using qualitative research from a number of related projects, the book examines the roles, functions and responsibilities of councillors and the expectations placed upon them by citizens, communities and government. It also examines the impact council membership has on other facets of the councillor's life. The book examines how councillors develop strategies to overcome the constraints and restrictions on their office so as to be able to govern their communities, balance their political and public life and democratise and hold to account a vast array of unelected bodies that spend public money and develop public policy without the electoral mandate and legitimacy held by our councillors.

by Daniel Pitt
The Conservative Party and the Constitution examines the profound influence on Britain's constitutional framework over nearly two centuries. Drawing on exclusive interviews, archival records, and historical sources, the book reveals the Party's statecraft and offers fresh insights into the Conservatives' role in shaping modern governance. Essential for historians, political scientists, and those engaged with British politics, this study illuminates the dynamic interplay of power, ideology, and constitutional change, making it a vital contribution to understanding Britain's constitutional history.

May 1985Wie entsteht Religion?
by Alfred North Whitehead, Hans Günter Holl

May 2021Escapades in Evolution
Of humans, chimps and other capers of nature
by Matthias Glaubrecht
Humans are rapidly changing the conditions of evolution, and while many species have not yet been discovered, the extinction of numerous species is becoming more and more dramatic. In this book, Matthias Glaubrecht contrasts the impending “end of evolution”, of which the evolutionary biologist writes in his bestseller of the same name, with the beauty, diversity and also the whims of nature. In 36 short chapters, the zoologist presents the animal and the all-tooanimal from the curiosity cabinet of evolution, easy to understand and with a good touch of humour – from dinosaurs with four wings to the annual new “Minnelied” hit of the humpback whale to the women’s communes of bonobos who use sex as a form of social bonding.

May 2002Die Religion der Gesellschaft
by Niklas Luhmann, André Kieserling

Humanities & Social SciencesApril 2022Chinese religion in contemporary Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan
The cult of the Two Grand Elders
by Fabian Graham
In Singapore and Malaysia, the inversion of Chinese Underworld traditions has meant that Underworld demons are now amongst the most commonly venerated deities in statue form, channelled through their spirit mediums, tang-ki. The Chinese Underworld and its sub-hells are populated by a bureaucracy drawn from the Buddhist, Taoist and vernacular pantheons. Under the watchful eye of Hell's 'enforcers', the lower echelons of demon soldiers impose post-mortal punishments on the souls of the recently deceased for moral transgressions committed during their prior incarnations. Chinese religion in contemporary Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan offers an ethnography of contemporary Chinese Underworld traditions, where night-time cemetery rituals assist the souls of the dead, exorcised spirits are imprisoned in Guinness bottles, and malicious foetus ghosts are enlisted to strengthen a temple's spirit army. Understanding the religious divergences between Singapore and Malaysia (and their counterparts in Taiwan) through an analysis of socio-political and historical events, Fabian Graham challenges common assumptions about the nature and scope of Chinese vernacular religious beliefs and practices. Graham's innovative approach to alterity allows the reader to listen to first-person dialogues between the author and channelled Underworld deities. Through its alternative methodological and narrative stance, the book intervenes in debates on the interrelation between sociocultural and spiritual worlds, and promotes the destigmatisation of spirit possession and discarnate phenomena in the future study of mystical and religious traditions.

The pandemic and beyond
by Caroline Redhead, Melanie Smallman
This book is a powerful addition to a developing literature informed by arts and humanities research carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through its eight chapters, the book stimulates broadly-drawn discussions about exceptional executive powers in an emergency, the role of trust, and the importance of the principles of good governance - such as selflessness, ethics, integrity, accountability and honesty in leadership. The lessons drawn out in this book will support future decision-makers in both ordinary times and extra-ordinary emergencies.
