Understanding and challenging racialisation of Roma in Europe and beyond

This book offers a comprehensive study of racialisation of Romani communities in Europe (and beyond). Drawing on the idea of unbelonging it demonstrates how Romani communities are placed in a position of visceral visibility by local, national and international institutions as well as public media discourses. It shows how such positionality impacts the ability of Roma to self-represent politically and build capacity for change. From the position of unbelonging the book offers an account of Romani agency which both challenges the mainstream representations of Roma but also develops an alternative none-nation-state sense of belonging. In doing so the book outlines an account of Romani alternative expressions in order to take control of their relationship with their own history, future, knowledge, and identity, and the rest of the society.

Hans-Ulrich Treichel erhielt den Leonce- und Lena-Preis des Darmstädter Literarischen März 1985. »Bei seiner Lesung ist sie gleich da, die inspirierte Präzison, diese verletzte, doch angriffige, hochgescheite Sensibilität, die ganz wenig Worte macht, wenn es mit ganz wenigen Worten zu machen ist. Gedrängt Abgekürztes, die düsteren Endzeitgefühle sind knapp, fast satirisch gefaßt: ›Noch hören wir uns husten‹ steht da als Lebenstrost, als momentane Lebensgarantie. Und dann hämmert mit ›Viel Glück‹ das bissige, kantig rhythmisierte Pathos, mit dem der Autor soviel körperlichen Raum schafft, daß das Publikum unwillig zu klatschen beginnt. Die Reime antworten sich unerwartet und scheinbar ungeordnet oft mitten in den Zeilen, sind jedoch satzmusikalisch mit bestem Gespür gesetzt. Auffällig: Dieser Lyriker hat Distanz, schaut auch von sich weg, gelegentlich von sich ab – hinaus in die weitere Gesellschaft und wie sie’s so treibt mit fanatisierter Freizeit-Körperkultur als Fluchtlauf weg von den ›sauren Gefilden‹, den ›schwarzen Gedanken‹ samt Gebrüll von ›Krieg und Untergang‹. Letzteres ein Hauptthema. Das andere: die Liebe, ihre Fast-Unmöglichkeit und trotzdem immer wieder ein Aufruf dazu: ›Wir fürchten uns ein Leben lang / Wir lieben uns nur einen Tag.‹« (Beatrice von Matt, Neue Züricher Zeitung) Immer reagieren Gedichte auf Not-Situationen, auf die Not, die war, die ist, die kommen wird. Es ist die Not, der man zu entkommen sucht – und der doch ein Großes zu verdanken ist: sie treibt immer aufs neue ins Gedicht.

Genèse et évolution d'une pièce à scandale

Molière et son premier Tartuffe sheds light on one of the most enduring mysteries in world theatre: the nature, structure and purpose of the first and no longer extant version of his most controversial play, Le Tartuffe. The study provides a succinct overview of the problem and a close analysis of events leading up to the original performance at Versailles. A careful reading of Molière's own defence of this version situates its overriding inspiration in his wish to satirise specific religious groupings, whilst hoping vainly to avoid censure from the religious establishment of his day. There are three appendices: the first evaluates the hypotheses of a complete or incomplete play; the second analyses the claims that Molière took certain people as models for Tartuffe, and the final appendix seeks to reopen the question of Molière's stance towards religion. The conclusion is that Le Tartuffe should not be seen as inherently hostile to religion, but rather as constituting a plea for tolerance, charity and transparency in its practice, none of which runs counter to the spirit and tenets of historic Christianity. This will appeal to lecturers and students of French Studies and Theatre Studies. ;

Women reading Shakespeare, 1660-1900 comprehensively rediscovers a lost tradition of women's writing on Shakespeare. Since Margaret Cavendish published the first critical essay on Shakespeare in 1664, women have written as scholars, critics, editors, performers and popularisers of Shakespeare. Many found in Shakespeare criticism the opportunity to raise a wide variety of issues, ranging from the use of women in society, family life, social relations and ethnic difference. In their different ways, women appropriated Shakespeare to their own ends - not always in step with their male contemporaries. Virtually none of this work is available today; it is unread and unknown. This fascinating anthology draws upon extensive new research to collect for the first time in one volume the Shakespeare criticism of some fifty British and American women writing before 1900. It includes the work of both familiar and unknown names and represents the diversity of literary genres used by women: the scholarly article, the periodical essay, book-length studies, personal memoirs, books for children, school editions. The volume also includes previously unknown Shakespeare illustrations by women, and a general introduction to the development of women's criticism of Shakespeare before 1900. ;
