        Hariulf’s History of St Riquier

        by Kathleen Thompson

        A new and accessible translation of Hariulf's History of St Riquier, this book examines the history of a monastic community from the seventh to the eleventh century. It covers the ascetic life of the founding saint and the development of the community under the Carolingians in the late eighth and ninth centuries. There were setbacks when the house was sacked by the Vikings and the founder's relics were stolen for political ends, but it recovered in the tenth and eleventh centuries and developed the links with both the Norman and English courts that enable Hariulf to make interesting observations about the Norman Conquest of England. Hariulf's description of the monastic site with its three churches and the liturgical arrangements practised there, as well as the relics, treasures, books and endowments of a great monastic foundation, make his history an important source for monastic history.

        After 1851

        The material and visual cultures of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham

        by Edited by Kate Nichols, Sarah Victoria Turner

        Echoing Joseph Paxton's question at the close of the Great Exhibition, 'What is to become of the Crystal Palace?', this interdisciplinary essay collection argues that there is considerable potential in studying this unique architectural and art-historical document after 1851, when it was rebuilt in the South London suburb of Sydenham. It brings together research on objects, materials and subjects as diverse as those represented under the glass roof of the Sydenham Palace itself; from the Venus de Milo to Sheffield steel, souvenir 'peep eggs' to war memorials, portrait busts to imperial pageants, tropical plants to cartoons made by artists on the spot, copies of paintings from ancient caves in India to 1950s film. Essays do not simply catalogue and collect this eclectic congregation, but provide new ways for assessing the significance of the Sydenham Crystal Palace for both nineteenth- and twentieth-century studies. The volume will be of particular interest to researchers and students of British cultural history, museum studies, and art history.

        Neue Totentänze

        Holzstiche von Karl-Georg Hirsch

        by Herbert Kästner, Volker Braun, Peter Gosse, Kerstin Hensel, Richard Pietraß, Hubert Schirneck, Kathrin Schmidt

        In einer den Schönheiten des Daseins so zugewandten Reihe wie der Insel-Bücherei hatte von Anbeginn auch das »memento mori« seinen Platz. Nach Hans Holbeins Bildern des Todes (IB Nr. 221; 1917) und dem Heidelberger Totentanz von 1485 (IB Nr. 1092; 1991) erscheinen nun Neue Totentänze – Holzstiche, geschaffen von Karl-Georg Hirsch, einem der bedeutendsten, wenn nicht dem bedeutendsten Holzschneider der Gegenwart. In enger Korrespondenz zu Gedichten von Autoren seiner eigenen und der ihm nachfolgenden Generation zur Vergänglichkeit alles Irdischen hat Hirsch in dieser Holzschnittfolge das tradierte Totentanzmotiv neu gedeutet und mit einer Selbstbefragung zu Tod und Sterben verbunden. In Hirschs dynamischer Handschrift ist kein Platz für sanftes Abschiednehmen; Mensch und Tod sind in ekstatischen Tänzen und bizarren Konstellationen verbunden, sind Figuren eines von jeher und für immer verbundenen Paares.

        Courtship and constraint

        Rethinking the making of marriage in Tudor England

        by Diana O'Hara, Peter Lake, Anthony Milton, Jason Peacey, Alexandra Gajda

        The first study of early modern English courtship as a subject in its own right. New historical and anthropological insights into the making of marriage, and an arresting and exciting contribution to the history of the family. Takes the interpretation of the English church court material to a new level of sophistication. Explores new or neglected subjects such as the use of gifts or tokens and the role of go-betweens in English courtship. The fresh and wholly original perspectives on English courtship offered here should redirect and revitalise the history of marriage in early modern England. ;

        The matter of miracles

        Neapolitan baroque architecture and sanctity

        by Series edited by Amelia Jones, Helen Hills, Marsha Meskimmon

        This book investigates baroque architecture through the lens of San Gennaro's miraculously liquefying blood in Naples. This vantage point allows a bracing and thoroughly original rethink of the power of baroque relics and reliquaries. It shows how a focus on miracles produces original interpretations of architecture, sanctity and place which will engage architectural historians everywhere. The matter of the baroque miracle extends into a rigorous engagement with natural history, telluric philosophy, new materialism, theory and philosophy. The study will transform our understanding of baroque art and architecture, sanctity and Naples. Bristling with new archival materials and historical insights, this study lifts the baroque from its previous marginalisation to engage fiercely with materiality and potentiality and thus unleash baroque art and architecture as productive and transformational.

        Religion in Revolutionary England

        by Christopher Durston, Judith Maltby

        This book offers a collection of essays tightly focused around the issue of religion in England between 1640 and 1660, a time of upheaval and civil war in England. Edited by well-known scholars of the subject, topics include the toleration controversy, women's theological writing, observance of the Lord's Day and prayer books. To aid understanding, the essays are divided into three sections examining theology in revolutionary England, inside and outside the revolutionary National Church and local impacts of religious revolution. Carefully and thoughtfully presented, this book will be of great use for those seeking to better understand the practices and patterns of religious life in England in this important and fascinating period. ;
