Canongate Books Ltd.
Canongate is an independent publisher: since 1973 we’ve worked to unearth and amplify the most vital, exciting voices we can find, wherever they come from, and we’ve published all kinds of books – thoughtful, upsetting, gripping, beatific, vulgar, chaste, unrepentant, life-changing . . . Along the way there have been landmarks of fiction – including Alasdair Gray’s masterpiece Lanark, and Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, the best-ever-selling Booker winner – and non-fiction too. We’ve published an American president and a Guantanamo detainee; we’ve campaigned for causes we believe in and fought court cases to get our authors heard. And twice we’ve won Publisher of the Year. We’re still fiercely independent, and we’re as committed to unorthodox and innovative publishing as ever. Cannabis
Prescribing aid for physicians
by Dr. Franjo Grotenhermen and Dr. Klaus Häußermann
The therapeutic use of cannabis follows the maxim: Start low, go slow! That is how to reach the optimum dose and efficacy with minimum side effects. But this balancing act requires relevant information. Our authors, recognised cannabis experts, have put everything important together in one place: - Indications and routes of administration - Effects, interactions and side effects - Selection and prescription of suitable cannabis-based medicines - Practical tips, e.g. about travelling or driving and road use The 4th edition includes updates on the legal situation, the pharmacology of the endocannabinoid system and of cannabidiol. Directions for use and tips for patients taking cannabis have been added, together with the new prescribing modalities for physicians as well as a list of available cannabis products. This prescribing aid covers the expanded range of cannabis-based medicines and the current legal position.

Cannabis
What we know,what we need to know
by Peter Cremer-Schaeffer
For the current German government coalition the legalisation of cannabis is a done deal. Over the course of the legislative period, the possibility is to be created of providing adults with a controlled supply of cannabis for recreational purposes. But regardless of that, the health consequences of cannabis use remain controversial. In his book, the author debates the state of opinion. What findings on cannabis are definite today, and which questions remain unanswered? He also takes stock of the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes, which has been legal for years. Whether about the plant, its effects on body and mind or the legal situation in other countries, anyone who wishes to have a well-considered say on the topic of cannabis needs to read this book.

May 2024Get Out of the Nursing Crisis!
New concepts between profession and solidarity
by Thomas Klie
Nursing is sick and lacking. In funding, staff and structure. The issue of who is going to care for Germany's elderly and sick in the future, and how and where they are going to do so, is completely open. One thing is certain: caring won’t work at all without the “joint commitment of everyone”. Thomas Klie, an expert in this fi eld, identifi es and analyses the dilemmas of the care industry. Above all, though, he and other experts present ideas and perspectives for the future – and in doing so challenge the hitherto half-hearted to lurching care policy.

Humanities & Social SciencesApril 2007Labour, the state, social movements and the challenge of neo-liberal globalisation
by Andrew Gamble, Steven Fielding, Steve Ludlam, John Callaghan, Andrew Taylor, Steve Ludlam, Stephen Wood
With the emergence of neo-liberalism in the 1980s as the dominant domestic and international political-economic orthodoxy, labour as both a social category and political movement tended to be written off or ignored by academics, politicians and commentators. However, at a time when the world's working class is growing faster than at any previous time in history and neo-liberalism is widely challenged, this orthodoxy is clearly inadequate. The spread of global production means that to ignore labour, its organisations, interests and politics, is to ignore one of the key components of that process. Labour organisations have not gone away and neither has the state: their relationship remains as significant as ever. The strategic relationship between trade unions and social movements, nationally and internationally, has also developed markedly, especially in the south. New patterns of resistance are emerging to challenge global capital and those who assert that globalisation is irresistible. ;

Kleine Studie über die Impotenz
by Gerlind Reinshagen
