        'More work! Less pay!'

        Rebellion and repression in Italy, 1972–77

        by Phil Edwards

        In the mid-1970s, a long wave of contentious radicalism swept through Italy. 'Proletarian youth', 'metropolitan Indians', 'the area of Autonomy': a shifting galaxy of groups and movements practised new forms of activism. Factories and universities were occupied; rent and utility payments were withheld; neo-Fascists and drug pushers were attacked on sight. The movements were at once creative and brutal, intransigent and playful. A particular target for mockery was the parliamentary Left, and above all the Italian Communist Party (PCI). An earlier wave of radical activism had culminated in the Hot Autumn of 1969; then, the PCI had managed to 'ride the tiger' of industrial militancy, emerging with its credibility enhanced. Now, however, the PCI was committed to compromise with the ruling Christian Democrats. The second cycle of contention thus ended in a hostile engagement: rather than adopt their policies, the PCI labelled the movements Fascists, criminals and hooligans. By the end of 1977 the movements were broken, while the PCI had moved sharply to the Right. The main beneficiaries were left-wing 'armed struggle' groups such as the Red Brigades. Building on Sidney Tarrow's 'cycle of contention' model and drawing on a wide range of Italian materials, Phil Edwards has told the story of a unique and fascinating group of political movements, and of their disastrous engagement with the mainstream Left. As well as shedding light on a neglected period of twentieth century history, this book offers lessons for understanding today's contentious movements ('No Global', 'Black Bloc') and today's 'armed struggle' groups. ;

        Art as worldmaking

        Critical essays on realism and naturalism

        by Malcolm Baker, Andrew Hemingway, Andrew Hemingway, Briony Fer, Joshua Shannon, Adrian Rifkin, Malcolm Baker, Martina Droth, Caroline Arscott, Anne Wagner, Martin Powers, Neil McWilliam, Celeste Brusati, T.J. Clark, Rebecca Zurier, Steve Edwards, Tamar Garb, Lisa Tickner, Alistair Rider, Thomas Crow, Gail Day

        Art as worldmaking is a response to Alex Potts's provocative 2013 book Experiments in modern realism. Twenty essays by leading scholars test Potts's recasting of realism through examinations of art produced in different media and periods, ranging from eighth-century Chinese garden aesthetics to video work by the contemporary Russian collective Radek Community. While the book does not neglect avatars of pictorial realism such as Menzel and Eakins, or the question of nineteenth-century realism's historical antecedents, it is contemporary in orientation in that many contributors are particularly concerned with the questions that sculpture, photography and non-traditional media pose for realism as an aesthetic norm. It will be essential reading for students of art history concerned with art's truth value or more broadly with conceptual problems of representation and the intersections of art and politics.

        The lives of Thomas Becket

        by Michael Staunton

        This collection tells the story of Thomas Becket's turbulent life, violent death and extraordinary posthumous acclaim in the words of his contemporaries. The only modern collection from the twelfth-century Lives of Thomas Becket in English and features all his major biographers, including many previously untranslated extracts. Providing both a valuable glimpse of the late twelfth-century world, and an insight into the minds of those who witnessed the events. By using contemporary sources, this book is the most accessible way to study this central episode in medieval history. Thomas Becket features prominently in most medieval core courses. This book allows the subject to be taught as never before, and is highly suitable as a set text.

        Wünsch Dir nicht, daß ich mich ändere

        Briefe 1957–1965

        by Samuel Beckett, Martha Dow Fehsenfeld, Lois More Overbeck, Dan Gunn, George Craig, Chris Hirte

        Der dritte Band der Briefe Samuel Becketts zeigt den Autor bei dem fast aussichtslosen Versuch, sowohl den Anforderungen, die sein wachsender internationaler Ruhm mit sich bringt, gerecht zu werden als auch dem Bedürfnis nach Alleinsein und Ruhe, woraus allein neue Texte entstehen können, Raum zu geben. Beckett schreibt in dieser Zeit Hörspiele ( Alle, die da fallen und Aschenglut ), ein Fernsehspiel ( He, Joe ) und das Drehbuch für Film . Nach einer Unterbrechung von zehn Jahren entsteht wieder ein Roman, Wie es ist . Während er sich in der Vergangenheit zurückhaltend und spärlich zum eigenen Schreiben äußerte, widmet er nunmehr der Beschreibung und Erläuterung des neu Entstehenden Brief um Brief. Zum ersten Mal tritt eine Frau als seine wichtigste Briefpartnerin in Erscheinung. Eine Fülle lebendiger, eindringlicher Schreiben an Barbara Bray, Hörspielredakteurin der BBC, bildet das Zentrum dieses Bandes. Ein ausführlicher Einleitungsteil informiert über den zeit- und literaturgeschichtlichen Kontext. Anmerkungen liefern detailliert Erklärungen. Ein Register erschließt den Band. Separat werden die wichtigsten Briefpartner vorgestellt.

        Queer as folklore

        The hidden queer history of myths and monsters

        by Sacha Coward

        A celebration of queer history like you've never seen it before. Queer as folklore travels across centuries and continents to reveal the unsung heroes and villains of storytelling, magic and fantasy. Featuring images from archives, galleries and museums around the world, each chapter investigates the queer history of different mythic and folkloric characters, both old and new. Leaving no headstone unturned, Sacha Coward takes you on a wild ride through the night from ancient Greece to the main stage of RuPaul's Drag Race, visiting cross-dressing pirates, radical fairies and the graves of the 'queerly departed' along the way. Queer communities have often sought refuge in the shadows and created safe spaces in underworlds. But these forgotten narratives tell stories of resilience that deserve to be heard. Join any Pride march and you will see a glorious display of papier-mâché unicorn heads, drag queens in mermaid tails and more fairy wings than you can shake a trident at. These are not just accessories: they are queer symbols with historic roots. To truly understand who queer people are today, we must confront the twisted tales of the past.
