        The Chronicle of Montecassino by Leo Marsicanus, c. 529–1075

        The chronicle of Leo Marsicanus recounts the history of the abbey of Montecassino from its foundation by St. Benedict in the sixth-century up to 1075. It presents a detailed and compelling story of tribulation and renewal, with the abbey twice destroyed and abandoned in the early Middle Ages and then rebuilt. It concludes with an informative account of the building and dedication of the new abbey church by Abbot Desiderius in 1066-71. The chronicle is also a key source for the more general history of southern Italy in the early Middle Ages, and of the conquest of the region by the Normans during the eleventh century. In addition, Montecassino was one of the great intellectual centres of western Christendom and a major contributor to the reform movement within the Church during the later eleventh century. Leo's chronicle is a crucial witness to that role.

This richly-annotated translation by a leading British specialist makes these Carolingian histories accessible in English for the first time, encouraging readers to reassess and evaluate a crucially formative period of European history. Produced in the 830s in the imperial palace of Louis the Pious, The Annals of St-Bertin were continued away from the Court, first by Bishop Prudentius of Troyes, then by the great scholar-politician Archbishop Hinemar of Rheims. The authors' distinctive voices and interests give the work a personal tone rarely found in medieval annals. They also contain uniquely detailed information on Carolingian politics, especially the reign of the West Frankish king, Charles the Bald (840-877). No other source offers so much evidence on the Continental activities of the Vikings. Janet L. Nelson offers in this volume both an entrée to a crucial Carolingian source and an introduction to the historical setting of teh Annals and possible ways of reading the evidence. Opening with two articles by the late Michael Horovitz, an important figure in the 'Blake Renaissance' of the 1960s, the issue goes on to investigate the ideological struggle over Blake in the early part of the twentieth century, with particular reference to W. B. Yeats. This is followed by articles on the artistic avant-garde and underground of the 1960s and on Blake's significance for science fiction authors of the 1970s. Knapp und nüchtern im Stil, geht es darin um Öffentliches (»Von hohen Ämtern, Von Parteien«) wie Privates (»Von Anhängern und Freunden, Vom Gespräch«), aber auch um allgemein Menschliches (»Von der Wahrheit, Von der Menschennatur«). Bacon verstand die »Essays« als eine Art Gebrauchsanleitung für das Überleben des Einzelnen in der Gesellschaft: Der Mensch sollte sich anpassen und verbessern können, getreu der Formel: »Das Benehmen der Menschen sei wie ihre Kleidung, nicht zu eng oder zu knapp, sondern mit Raum zu Bewegung und Übung.« Niemandem ist es gelungen, Ursache und Wirkung menschlicher Handlungen in ihren psychischen und sozialen Verflechtungen so prägnant zu beschreiben wie Francis Bacon, der, angeregt von Montaignes »Essais«, von Galilei und Descartes, in seinem Werk die Fundamente des modernen Denkens gelegt hat.

        Three of the most important chronicles of eleventh-century Germany were composed in the south-western duchy of Swabia. The chronicles reveal how between 1049 and 1100 the centripetal attraction of the reform papacy became the dominant fact of intellectual life in German reformed monastic circles. In the abbey of Reichenau Herman 'the Lame' composed a chronicle of the reign of Emperor Henry III (1039-56). His pupil, Berthold of Reichenau, continued his master's work, composing a detailed account of 1076-1079 in Germany. Bernold, a clergyman of Constance, continued the work of Herman and Berthold in a text containing the fullest extant account of 1080-1100. Herman's waning enthusiasm for the monarchy and growing interest in the newly reformed papacy were intensified in Berthold's chronicle, and writing in the new context of the reformed monasteries of south-western Germany, Bernold preached total obedience to the Gregorian papacy. The Swabian chronicles are an indispensable resource to the student of the changing loyalties and conflicts of eleventh-century Germany.

        Amos Oz richtet in der 1976 entstandenen Erzählung Der Berg des bösen Rates sein Augenmerk auf die Zeit unmittelbar vor der Gründung des Staates Israel. Im Mai 1946 werden der aus Schlesien 1932 nach Palästina eingewanderte Veterinärmediziner Hans Kipnis und seine aus Warschau stammende Frau Ruth zu einem Ball im Palast des Britischen Hochkommissars für Palästina eingeladen. Beide nehmen die Einladung zu dem Fest auf dem Berg des bösen Rates an, und im Verlaufe des Abends treffen beide eine existentielle Entscheidung - eine Entscheidung, die Ausdruck ihrer Elinstellung zu der sich abzeichnenden Gründung des Staates Israel ist. In dieser vielstimmigen, nach dem klassischen Muster der Novelle komponierten Erzählung ruft Amos Oz die unterschiedlichen Erwartungen der europäischen Einwanderer in Palästina vor der Gründung des Staates Israel in Erinnerung.

        Im März 1925 zieht der 21-jährige Dr. Theodor Wiesengrund für einige Monate nach Wien, um seine kompositorische Ausbildung bei Alban Berg fortzusetzen. Dieser macht ihn mit dem Wiener Streichquartett und seinem 28-jährigen Primarius Rudolf Kolisch bekannt, einem der wichtigsten Interpreten der Neuen Musik der Schönberg-Schule. Adorno und Kolisch werden schnell Freunde und beginnen einen ausgedehnten Briefwechsel, in dem sie intensiv über musikalische Themen – Komposition, Analyse, Reproduktion – diskutieren, nicht zuletzt über das gemeinsame (aber nie realisierte) Projekt einer »Theorie der musikalischen Aufführung«. Aber auch Privates kommt ausführlich zur Sprache. Sorgfältig ediert, ausführlich kommentiert und ergänzt durch einen reichhaltigen Materialienteil mit einigen bislang unveröffentlichten Texten und Dokumenten, liegt dieser Briefwechsel nun erstmals vollständig vor. Er gewährt Einblick in eine Beziehung, die für die Geschichte und die Aufführungstheorie der Neuen Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts von einzigartiger Bedeutung ist, in der sich aber auch die Zeitläufe und ihre Verwerfungen spiegeln.
