Psychoanalysis and the family in twentieth-century France

        Françoise Dolto and her legacy

by Richard Bates, David Hopkin, Maire Cross, Jennifer Sessions

In the last quarter of the twentieth century, if French people had a parenting problem or dilemma there was one person they consulted above all: Françoise Dolto (1908-88). But who was Dolto? How did she achieve a position of such influence? What ideas did she communicate to the French public? This book connects the story of Dolto's rise to two broader histories: the dramatic growth of psychoanalysis in postwar France and the long-running debate over the family and the proper role of women in society. It shows that Dolto's continued reputation in France as a liberal and enlightened educational thinker is at best only partially deserved and that conservative and anti-feminist ideas often underpinned her prominent public interventions. While Dolto retains the status of a national treasure, her career has had far-reaching and sometimes harmful repercussions for French society, particularly in the treatment of autism.

        Nomos und Narrativ

        Studien zur Theorie des Rechts

        by Robert Cover, Benedict Vischer

        We Can Do Better

        by Arvay, Clemens G.

How Environmental Destruction Caused the Corona Pandemic and Why Ecological Medicine Can Save Us The corona crisis can repeat itself at any time. A book about the disease-causing mechanisms of environmental pollution, and an innovative guide out of the health crisis Clemens Arvay is an expert in the field of medical ecology. In WE CAN DO BETTER, he takes the current corona crisis as an opportunity to look far beyond and work out exactly why negative environmental factors are responsible for an increasing deterioration of public health. Yet the author also points the way out of the calamity, explaining how we ourselves and future generations can improve our health through a different approach to nature. It was only because of environmental factors that COVID-19 was able to become a pandemic. Thus, for Clemens Arvay the corona crisis represents a symptom of a much larger problem, namely, a natural habitat that is making humans sick. It is already known today that fine particulate matter intensifies not only corona but also influenza infections, thereby killing hundreds of thousands of people worldwide every year. Light pollution leads to a rapid increase in cancer, and even the abrasion of automobile tires inhibits our immune system. Clemens Arvay makes himself clear: this is our last chance to take control of the situation. After the corona crisis, we must never allow things to return to the way they were before. Arvay therefore calls for nothing less than an eco-medical revolution in healthcare; a different, less global and industrialized lifestyle. And he shows each and every one of us how we can utilize factors in our environment to protect our health, strengthen our immune system, and stay well. The republican line

Caricature and French republican identity, 1830–52

by Laura O'Brien, Maire Cross, David Hopkin

        The years between 1830 and 1852 were turbulent ones in French politics - but were also a golden age for French political caricature. Caricature was wielded as a political weapon, so much so that in 1835 the French politician Adolphe Thiers claimed that 'nothing was more dangerous' than graphic satire. This book is the first full study of French political caricature during the critical years of the July Monarchy (1830-48) and the Second Republic (1848-52). Focusing on the crucial question of republicanism, it shows how caricature was used - by both republicans and anti-republicans - to discuss, define and articulate notions of republican identity during this highly significant period in modern French and European history. ;

        From empire to exile

History and memory within the pied-noir and harki communities, 1962–2012

by Series edited by Maire Cross, David Hopkin, Claire Eldridge

This book explores the commemorative afterlives of the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62), one of the world's most iconic wars of decolonisation. It focuses on the million French settlers - pieds-noirs - and the tens of thousands of harkis - the French army's native auxiliaries - who felt compelled to migrate to France when colonial rule ended. Challenging the idea that Algeria was a 'forgotten' war that only returned to French public attention in the 1990s, this study reveals a dynamic picture of memory activism undertaken continuously since 1962 by grassroots communities connected to this conflict. Reconceptualising the ways in which the Algerian War has been debated, evaluated and commemorated in the subsequent five decades, From empire to exile makes an original contribution to important discussions surrounding the contentious issues of memory, migration and empire in contemporary France that will appeal to students and scholars of history and cultural studies.

        Die Pariser Weltausstellung 1889

        Bilder von der Globalisierung

        by Beat Wyss

Manual Trigger Point Therapy and Dry Needling for Chronic Pain

Myofascial medicine as an approach to an unresolved challenge

        by Beat Dejung

Medicine for the relief of pain has made little progress in the last 50 years. 16% of our population claim to suffer from chronic pain, for which no lasting help can be found, despite years of treatment by different doctors. Trigger point therapy experts have integrated myofascial techniques into their everyday therapy in recent decades and through this they have achieved good results even with complex and chronic problems. In this book, instructors from the Interest Group for Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy (IMTT) in Switzerland present 33 complex cases of patients with chronic pain, whose pain they were able to relieve permanently with manual trigger point therapy and dry needling. Using these case studies, doublepage spreads with an educational, uniform layout clearly present the diagnosis, pathophysiology and chronifcation of myofascial pain syndromes and, in conclusion, describe encouraging and surprising successes despite previous therapy resistance.

        Visible strangers

Early modern urban identities, social visibility, and the Mediterranean paradigm

        by Filomena Viviana Tagliaferri

Visible strangers is a collection of essays on the nature of cultural pluralism in the Mediterranean and the different ways in which this was managed in various cities during the early modern period. The book's nine chapters considers new case studies, where authors offer a diachronic view of the nature of the co-presence of minorities in different urban spaces, investigated through the lens of the fascinating relationship between visibility and identity. The considered case studies cover different areas of the Mediterranean space: the Adriatic, the Ottoman empire between Asia and Africa, the Italian and Iberian peninsulas, the island of Malta, at the centre of the Mare Nostrum and host to many of its influences. The analysis of the way cultural pluralism expressed itself wishes to overcome the bias induced by 'Mediterraneanism', that has led to the Mediterranean as an area of study hardening into a conceptual category.

        Cross-border intimacies

Affect and emotions in marriage migration

        by Lara Momesso

Since the early 1990s, economic exchanges between China and Taiwan have paved the way to migration across a previously closed border and to social and cultural interactions between the two populations. Despite these broader changes, the unresolved issue of Taiwan sovereignty has tainted not only the relations between the two governments but also the everyday life of those who move across the Taiwan Strait. In this politicised environment, intimate and affective practices linked to cross-border marriage and family formation are never just private. Instead, they are deeply entangled with the emotional and affective processes generated at the macro and meso level of political and social life and revolving around national interests. Tracing the intimate, emotional and affective practices linked to family creation, identity formation and integration with the local and national communities, this ethnographic study offers a subjective, dynamic, and complex picture of what it means to be a mainland spouse in Taiwan.

        Frühe Texte und Kolumnen 1963-1971

        by Peter Bichsel, Beat Mazenauer

        The stadium century

Sport, spectatorship and mass society in modern France

by Robert W. Lewis. Series edited by Maire Cross, David Hopkin

The stadium century traces the history of stadia and mass spectatorship in modern France from the vélodromes of the late nineteenth century to the construction of the Stade de France before the 1998 soccer World Cup. As the book demonstrates, the stadium was at the centre of debates over public health and urban development and proved to be a key space for mobilising the urban crowd for political rallies and spectator sporting events alike. After 1945, the transformed French stadium constituted part of the process of postwar modernisation but also was increasingly connected to global transformations to the spaces and practices of sport. Drawing from a wide range of sources, the stadium century links the histories of French urbanism, mass politics and sport through the stadium in an innovative work that will appeal to historians, students of French history and the history of sport, and general readers alike.
